2009年３月、菊之助さんは、ロンドンのバービカン劇場で『NINAGAWA 十二夜』公演を予定していました。それに先だって、３月４日に、英国大使館で駐日大使夫人の臨席のもとに、菊之助さんのスピーチが行われました。きわめで限定された５０人ほどの観客が聞いた幻の講演会です。
依頼を受けた私は、スピーチライターとして草稿を作りました。菊之助さんは原稿に目を通して、決定稿が作られました。また、PowerPointを作るにあたって、江戸時代の浮世絵など、国立劇場の石橋健一郎さんの協力を得ました。
通訳は優秀な方でしたが、スピーチの原稿の英訳を、菊之助さん側で用意しました。この英訳を通訳に事前に渡してありました。この英文原稿を元に、スピーチが行われました。翻訳は、ロビン・トンプソンさんです。

　It is a great honour for me to have this opportunity to speak to you today. Although I revel in the illustrious-sounding name of Onoe Kikunosuke the Fifth, I am still an immature novice in the world of Kabuki and am constantly striving to polish my meagre skills. In an English context, I might liken myself to one of the so-called ‘Children of the Chapel’, the theatrical troupe of children active in Elizabethan and Jacobean England.
　It is extremely presumptuous of me to speak as a representative of the Kabuki theatre, but perhaps you would allow me to say a few words about my own upbringing as an actor who began his studies at the age of three, made his stage debut at the age of five, and who has spent the greater part of his life so far on the stage and in dressing rooms.
