August in Kyoto: ritual bonfires after Typhoon Lan

August in Kyoto 2023
Typhoon Lan was forecasted to directly hit Kyoto, so I took precautions. To prepare for a power outage, I first checked if all kinds of lights would turn on. I also charged my radio and smartphone, and made ice with plastic bottles for dealing with the heat. While I didn't expect water to be cut off, I filled the bathtub with water, both as a precaution and for cooling purposes. Finally I closed the dusty shutters that had been left open for a long time.
Fortunately there was no significant damage from rain and wind in Kyoto city, which was a relief. The day after the typhoon, I was able to watch the Gozan no Okuribi (Daimonji Bonfire) from a nearby hill, feeling relieved that it had been successfully carried out to send off the ancestors. Now I'm hoping for some rain.
