新説:ブルドーザの語源

牛眠る説 や 岡本直樹氏のbulldozing説とも違う説が出てきたので紹介する。

The origin of the Bulldozer and the name applied to it goes back many years. The first Bulldozer was built for the purpose of pushing loose dirt off the top of a fill. It consisted of two timbers with a wooden blade at one end, between which a bull ox was placed so that the unit was supported on the neck yoke and the bull in motion pushed the dirt ahead of the blade.Hence the name - "Bulldozer".

ビサイラスエリー社がインターナショナル・ハーベスタ(IH)社向けに供給していたブレード装置のセールスマニュアルより。

要約すれば、雄牛(去勢牛)を使ってブレードを押す装置なのでブルドーザと命名したとのこと。

既存説の間を取ったような説で、進駐軍の将校が勘違いして牛眠る説を唱えた(もしくは、聞いた日本人が牛眠ると解釈した)のも納得できる解説である。
