宇治平等院の藤棚：2024年5月22日（水）
いまから3年前の2021年4月22日に，下京区堀川松原から宇治市宇治蓮華にある平等院（開基は藤原頼通）の藤棚を観るために自転車で往復したことがある。
これが意外にも大変な道のりであった。地図上では，いま住んでいる場所が油小路通り沿いにあるので，これをひたすら南進して，七条通，八条通，九条通を通り過ぎ，任天堂本社ビルのそばを通り過ぎた。途中から東に向かったのであるが，伏見区に入ると，高低差のある急な山道となった。結局，伏見桃山城，明治天皇伏見桃山陵，六地蔵，宇治病院の前を通り，京都大学宇治キャンパス（黄檗）を通り過ぎ，宇治川を渡って平等院に到着した。
急な坂道の上り下りは地図を見ただけでは，気付かなかったのが盲点だった。思っていたよりは，とても長い道のりであった。途中，自転車を運転していて，どちらに行けばよいか分からなくなり，通りすがりのお年寄りに「宇治平等院はどちらですか」と尋ねると，「ここから自転車で平等院まで行きなはるのか？」と言われ，不思議がられた理由が後になって良く理解できた。
3年前の2021年は，コロナ禍の真っただ中にあったが，宇治平等院にある藤棚の藤の花がとてもきれいだったことが強く印象に残っている。宇治は紫式部のゆかりのまちであり，『源氏物語』54帖の最後の「宇治十帖」は宇治を舞台として描かれている。
The Wisteria Trellis at Byodo-in Temple in Uji：May 22nd(Wednesday)
Three years ago, on April 22, 2021, I rode my bicycle round trip from Horikawa Matsubara in Shimogyo Ward to Byodo-in Temple in Uji Renge, Uji City (founded by Fujiwara no Yorimichi) to see the wisteria trellis.
This turned out to be an unexpectedly challenging journey. On the map, since my current location is along Aburanokoji Street, I simply headed south, passing through Shichijo Street, Hachijo Street, and Kujo Street, and by the Nintendo headquarters building. At some point, I headed east, but once I entered Fushimi Ward, it became a steep mountain path with varying elevations. Eventually, I passed by Fushimi Momoyama Castle, Fushimi Momoyama Mausoleum of Emperor Meiji, Rokujizo, Uji Hospital, and Kyoto University Uji Campus (Obaku), crossed the Uji River, and arrived at Byodo-in Temple.
The steep uphill and downhill sections were a blind spot that I didn’t notice just by looking at the map. The journey was much longer than I had anticipated. At one point, while riding my bicycle, I got lost and asked an elderly passerby, "Which way is Byodo-in Temple in Uji?" She replied, "Are you really going to Byodo-in by bicycle from here?" Later, I understood well why she found it curious.
Three years ago, in 2021, we were in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, but I was strongly impressed by the beautiful wisteria flowers on the trellis at Byodo-in Temple in Uji. Uji is a town associated with Murasaki Shikibu, and the last ten chapters of "The Tale of Genji," known as "The Uji Chapters," are set in Uji.
