世界同時多発テロ事件から23年：2024年9月11日（水）

今から23年前の2001年9月11日午前8時46分（米国東部標準時夏時間，日本時間では同日午後9時46分）に，ニューヨーク世界貿易センタービルのノースタワーにアメリカン航空11便が激突した。次いで，サウスタワーに午前9時3分（日本時間午後10時3分），ユナイテッド航空175便が激突した。

　この「9.11事件」によって，24人の日本人を含めて，2,977人の人命が奪われた。25,000人以上の負傷者と，死傷者の数多くの家族と関係者に，その後，長期にわたって大きな禍根を与えた。これは，何よりも，戦争状態ではない平時のアメリカの金融都市の象徴的な中心地であるニューヨークで起きたという点で世界的に大きな衝撃を与えた。

　その後，アメリカのエネルギー安全保障の考え方において脱中東が加速した。アメリカはシェール革命によって，中東への石油依存度を大きく引き下げて，2019年には，アメリカは国としての「エネルギーの自立」を実現した。第一次石油危機後にニクソン政権以来，アメリカが標榜し続けてきた「エネルギー・インデペンデンス」を実現したことにより，二度の石油危機と湾岸危機・戦争に象徴される中東紛争に対するアメリカの中東戦略の基本指針が今や大きく様変わりした。「少なくともアメリカにとってみれば」，エネルギー安全保障の足枷を気にする必要は大きく低減した。

　21世紀の世界は，間違いなく，20世紀の世界の延長線上にはなく，非連続が起きたことに，日本人は早く気付くべきだ。その非連続のきっかけになったのが，2001年の「9.11事件」だった。

23 years ago, on September 11, 2001, at 8:46 AM Eastern Daylight Time (9:46 PM on the same day Japan time), American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York. Shortly after, at 9:03 AM (10:03 PM Japan time), United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower.

This '9/11 incident' claimed the lives of 2,977 people, including 24 Japanese citizens. It caused long-term trauma to more than 25,000 injured individuals and countless families and associates of the victims. Above all, the fact that this occurred in New York, a symbolic financial hub of the United States during peacetime, sent a shockwave around the world.

In the aftermath, the U.S. accelerated its move away from dependence on the Middle East in terms of energy security. Thanks to the shale revolution, the U.S. drastically reduced its reliance on Middle Eastern oil, achieving 'energy independence' as a nation by 2019. This accomplishment, fulfilling the 'energy independence' that the Nixon administration had long advocated following the first oil crisis, significantly altered the fundamental U.S. strategy toward the Middle East, which had been shaped by two oil crises and the Gulf crisis/war. At least from America's perspective, the need to be overly concerned about the constraints of energy security has diminished significantly.

The world of the 21st century is undoubtedly discontinuous from that of the 20th century, and Japanese people should have realized this sooner. The event that triggered this discontinuity was the '9/11 incident' of 2001.
