Cloudy with Blossoms:April 9th (Tuesday)

One of the seasonal words in haiku is "hana-gumori," or "cloudy with blossoms." During the late March to mid-April period when cherry blossoms are in full bloom, the sky remains bright but clouds gather, temperatures fluctuate significantly, and slightly chilly days occur.

In Kyoto city, cold rain fell from yesterday afternoon until dawn, and this morning a strong north wind blew fiercely, making it chilly. The fully bloomed Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms were scattered by the wind, dyeing the ground near the cherry trees white. Indeed, today's weather in Kyoto city is described as "hana-gumori." Another term used to describe the weather during this same period is "yōka-ten," which literally means "flower-nurturing weather." It refers to weather conditions that help flowers such as cherry blossoms last longer, particularly cloudy weather.
