The Australian Baseball League (ABL) was first established in 1989, but it went through several changes before its current incarnation was established in 2010. The league features six teams from across Australia and New Zealand and is the highest level of baseball competition in the region.

It is planned to expand the league in November 2023, and it was reported in May 2022 that the ABL has approached the Japanese side by having them form a team based in Australia and consisting mainly of Japanese nationals.

2023年11月にもリーグ拡大することが計画されており、ABLはオーストラリア国内を拠点とした日本人を主体とするチームを結成させることで日本側に打診していることが2022年5月に報じられた。
