実際に、カリフォルニア州、オレゴン州、ワシントン州は、4月3日に医療施設における、患者、スタッフ、訪問者のマスク着用義務を廃止した。すべてのスタッフと患者に対してマスク着用義務を維持している医療機関もまだ多いが、米国のほとんどの州では、医療現場でのマスク着用義務は段階的に廃止されている。
今週、欧州臨床微生物・感染症会議（ECCMID）で発表された研究によれば、ロンドンの大規模病院で、オミクロン登場以降の10カ月間（2021年12月から2022年9月）、マスクが義務化されたままの病棟と任意化された病棟の間で感染率に差は見られなかった、つまりサージカル・マスク着用は、少なくとも感染力の強くなったオミクロン型以降は、コロナの院内感染を減らす効果がなかった。
医療スタッフのマスク着用は、住民の免疫が広く浸透しているため、せいぜい非常に限られた効果しかなく、約2500例のCovid症例を検討しても有意な違いを検出することができなかった。これは、マスクの性能に関する現実的な証拠を示すものである。
マサチューセッツ州も、5月に医療施設内でのマスク義務を取りやめると発表した。
我が国一流の感染症専門家なら、この程度の研究など朝飯前のはず。文句あるなら、お手並み拝見、さあやってみなはれ。
突き詰めれば、これがこの研究の言わんとすることである。

In fact, the states of California, Oregon, and Washington eliminated mask requirements for patients, staff, and visitors in health care facilities on April 3. While there are still many healthcare facilities that maintain mask requirements for all staff and patients, most U.S. states are phasing out mask requirements in healthcare settings.
A study presented this week at the European Conference on Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ECCMID) found no difference in infection rates in a large London hospital between wards where masks remained mandatory and those where they were optional in the 10 months since the advent of Omicron (December 2021 to September 2022), meaning Surgical mask wearing was ineffective in reducing nosocomial transmission of coronas, at least after the omicron form, which has become more infectious.
Wearing masks by medical staff had at best a very limited effect because of widespread immunity of the population, and no significant difference could be detected when about 2500 Covid cases were examined. This provides realistic evidence regarding the performance of the masks.
Massachusetts also announced in May that it would drop its mask requirement in healthcare facilities.
