How is living in Koiwa share residence?
Hello! We asked the residents(D-san from Ethiopia, R-san from India and A-san from Kyrgyz) about things to know before moving in, after moving in, community between residents etc.
[Questions before moving in]
Host: Why did you choose this shared house?
A: We decided to move to Tokyo and live together. The shared house is not that expensive, close to the center of Tokyo, not far from the station and one of the cheapest options. We also really liked the pictures of rooms, kitchens and you replied our email immediately. it was easy to interact with us.
D: When we were looking at other shared houses, some shared houses are required residents to clean but this shared house offers the cleaning services so it's very good.
R: I agree with both of them. For me very important thing is close to station. We access center of Tokyo most of the time. I think it's very convenient place.
Host: Why did you choose shared house in general?
D: Since we graduated from university now we weren't ready to invest in apartment. It's very expansive until we work and save money. I think shared house is the cheapest option. That's why.
A: Everything already arranged in shared house like internet and utilities so you don't have to worry about things like that.
R: Especially when you move in already furnished so you don't have to buy futon or desk, anything like that. It's very convenient for people who just graduated and looking for a job or about to start a job.
A: Also we are foreigner so we don't know how to do that. It is difficult to go somewhere and ask about the internet and we don't speak Japanese.
Host: Is there anything you wanted to know before moving in?
D: I think one of the most important thing we wanted to know was whether we need a guarantor or not. That was one of our main priorities.
A: It's difficult to find a guarantor because all our friends are foreigners and our communities are foreigners.
R: Also we don't have hanko so we worried if we need our hanko to contract.
A: We did not know how to make the payment from ATM.
D: Yeah, because we have never done it before so we asked our friends to help us.
A: A lot of friends want to come to Tokyo for a month or so.
D: Yes, some shared houses only offer 6 months contract but here there is 45 days contract which is1 month and a half .
Host: How many luggage did you have when you moved in?
R: I actually moved from Nigata to Tokyo. I only carried 1 small bag with me and used JP post for 2 big boxes.
D: I had 5 medium size boxes and 1 medium size suit case. I also used UP post. I just carried with a small hand bag.
A: I also used JP post. I had 3 medium boxes. 1 suit case.
I can keep the boxes under my bed and I can keep the small suit case in my locker.
[Questions after moving in]
Host: Is there any noise problem?
R: Since I live right next to the washing machine but there is a time limit so there is not much problem. It's not very noisy once I shut my door, I can not really hear the washing machine.
Host: Are there any good services or facilities in the shared house?
D: Free coffee service, provide cleaning supplies and everything is provided and I think it's very important.
R: I like that we don't have to go to the coin laundry for washing clothes.
Also you don't have to put money in the washing machine so it's very convenient.
Host: How is the shared house?
D: I like it. We used to lived in a dorm and it's pretty similar and I like that this shared house is for female only so it's very comfortable.
A: I also like it. I enjoy.
R: Same. Again, it's very comfortable. So no problem.
Host: What is the most careful thing living in the share house?
R: Trying not to speak loud when we talk to each other.
D: I'm very careful not to leave mess of my personal items.
R: After using common shared public space, I try not to leave a mess.
Host: Pros and cons of living in a share house.
A: Good thing is cheap. Cons is shared kitchen and bath.
R: For me or for some body who just graduated, I don't think I could stay alone in Tokyo. It's a big city. Having people around is very calming. I don't talk to them but gather there so it's nice. Cons is shared toilets.
D: Same for me. Pros is the same. Cons is privacy or you have to be careful about the storage like how much bring your stuff.
[Community between residents]
Host :How about the communication with Japanese residents?
D: They spoke to us in English.
R: I think it's mixture of English and Japanese when I speak to residents.
Host: Is there any trouble with other residents?
D,R,A: No. There is no problem. Everyone is working so we don't really meet.
Host: Do you feel any cultural difference?
D: I think if somebody comes from my country, I would tell them to be quiet. Don't speak loud in a hallway and tell them to lower their voice when they are on the phone. Because my country's people are very loud.
A: I agree.
R: For me, we take a lot of space when we cook. We have too many ingredients so to be mindful of other people's private spaces and not take up too much space while cooking.
Host: When you can not understand Japanese, how do you deal with it?
A: Google translate.
R: Yes. If you take a photo, immediately translate it for you.
