Metabolic Syndrome and Lifestyle Diseases

P32 メタボと生活習慣病

Contact Health Promotion Department, Local Health Section
☎ 024-576-3736

“At the health checkup site, my body weight, blood pressure, and even the circumference of my stomach is measured. Is this really necessary?” It’s almost as if we can hear these inner voices. Why do you get a health exam in the first place? Every person has their own motivations, such as for their own health, family, or to be able to watch their grandchildren grow up. However, there is actually a secret relationship between lifestyle diseases and even the circumference of your stomach.

Date City’s current situation based on health exam results

Percentage of Lifestyle Disease

Compared to the rest of the prefecture, Date City has a tendency to have a higher percentage of lifestyle diseases. Should lifestyle diseases be left alone, it is possible for your healthy life expectancy (the period of time when, in addition to being generally healthy, an individual’s daily life is not inhibited by any issues), quality of life, etc. to decrease.

What Stage are You? A Graphic of Lifestyle Disease

Level 1
・Improper diet (surplus of calories, sodium, fat, etc.)
・Lack of exercise/physical activity
・Smoking
・Excessive alcohol consumption
・Excessive stress

Level 2
Better stop it here!
・Obesity
・High blood pressure
・High blood sugar
・High cholesterol

Level 3
・Morbid obesity (especially visceral fat obesity)
・Diabetes
・High blood pressure
・Hyperlipidemia

Level 4
・Coronary artery disease (heart attack, angina)
・Stroke
・Diabetic complications (blindness, artificial dialysis, etc.)

Level 5
・Partial body paralysis
・Disturbances in daily life
・Dementia

Make progress while there are no subjective symptoms

Lifestyle diseases are said to easily happen with the onset and progression of complications of other diseases. The Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare compares lifestyle diseases, which begin with diabetes, to that of a river: it flows from upstream to downstream. Even in the image above, you can see how lifestyle disease progresses. There is no flowing in the opposite direction.

Please take a good look. Where would you be currently?

It is vital to stop at your current state and prevent yourself from being washed downstream. No matter the stage, you can control the progress and flow by improving your lifestyle.

For the sake of your future quality of life, improve your lifestyle through “firm boundaries” at Level 2

Now that we’ve learned something new

Fat people, skinny people: there are individual differences, but everyone has fat on them. In that fat, there are fat cells. Usually, fat cells store and release surplus calories from inside your body. A substance that affects the body (otherwise known as cytokine) is also released, and if your BMI exceeds 25, it seems to do bad things in your blood... But never fear! If you undergo a health exam, you can understand the condition of even your unseen blood vessels. Please check to see how your blood vessels are doing and if they are unharmed!

Fat cells aren’t only for storage! They also release a substance (cytokine) that affects your body

The Hero: Cytokine
(At a BMI of 18.5~24.9)
Helps hormones that decrease blood sugar work effectively
Protects blood vessels from ailments such as inflammation and artery hardening
Signals that you’re full
Dispenses fat that becomes energy when needed

The Villain: Cytokine
(At a BMI of 25 or over)
Impedes the work of hormones that decrease blood sugar
Makes it easier for blood vessels to become inflamed
Increases blood pressure
Hardens small arteries
Creates blood clots within blood vessels

BMI 25+ Many villainous cytokine are released
BMI (Body Mass Index) is the ratio of one’s height and weight.
It can be calculated with the following: weight (kg) ÷ height (m) ÷ height (m)

We will assist you with your health!
We aim to help so that every person can live in good health. Please don’t hesitate to consult with us.

Coordinator for International Relations’ Monthly Column by Tony Gillan

Paternal Visits to Japan

There are a number of questions Japanese people frequently ask me as a foreign resident, one of them being “If you live in Japan, how do you take care of your parents in America?” This is usually asked once my status as an oldest son is disclosed, but as an American, the fact that I am one of three children means that the burden doesn’t fall entirely on my shoulders. Nonetheless, I do whatever possible to take care of them; which means that, on a regular basis, I have them come here.
So far only my father has come to visit, and even then only twice. His first visit occurred during the last three months of my appointment as Koori Town’s assistant language teacher. The stream of welcome parties for him flowed seamlessly into the relentless torrent of farewell parties for me, and eventually he was able to meet a sizeable percentage of the town’s kind-hearted population. We flew on the plane together back to America, but by then my father had been able to see firsthand my deep connection with the community, and came to understand why I was determined to return to live there after attending graduate school in America.
Two years later I did return to Koori, but an additional three years passed before my father came to visit me for a second time. At the time, I was working for an English conversation school in Fukushima City, but had been growing frustrated with the working conditions. Providentially, while he was here I was able to become a Date City CIR. Yet abruptly leaving one job for another, then moving to a new municipality, was a stressful experience which I doubt I could have weathered without his support. For my part, I supported him in improving his health, and he ended up losing ten kilograms over the course of three months.
As you can see, every time my father comes to Japan, my current employment ends; and his coming trip is no exception. This year marks my fifth year as a Date City CIR, and after my appointment ends in August, I will return to live in Koori. Before I move, I want my father to experience even just a bit of life in in Date; so if you catch sight of him, feel free to greet him and try speaking English. He doesn’t speak any Japanese!
