Late last year, we decided to start a YouTube video project in an easygoing style.
We pulled out our old GoPro5, which had been sitting unused for years, and decided to run the course my husband had been waiting for the first time. Starting in Harajuku, we took the back roads, then Shibuya, Ebisu, Hiroo, Roppongi, Aoyama, back to Ebisu again, Hatagaya, and finally ending at a cafe in Shimokitazawa.

My husband was basically in charge of filming. He fixed the old GoPro to the back of his BROMPTON. He decided to use the Sony RX0, which he normally use to take still photos on rides, for hand-held video this time. And we each had our own iPhones.

We started the shooting by unfolding my BROMPTON folding bicycle at Jingu-bashi bridge near Harajuku station. As I was still not quite used to it, it took me a while to assemble it awkwardly.

Next, my husband aims at the scene of me crossing a wide intersection from a pedestrian bridge. Once I crossed the intersection to check the location, it took a lot of effort to get back across, and when I did, my image was hidden by a truck making a right turn.... At this point, my husband was quite irritated. No amount of time would be enough at the starting point.

The route was an interesting one, with a few surprises thrown in here and there, as my husband had planned. As soon as we left Harajuku Station, we entered a back street, avoiding the main street, where we could see the Yoyogi Gymnasium from the back, and when we thought we were on a narrow street, we suddenly came to a familiar big intersection. The Yamanote Line, which is supposed to run through a big city, runs beside a slightly desolate street.

This was almost the first time we had ever shot a video together with the intention of showing it to others, and it didn't quite work out the way we wanted it to.

I was riding toward a city object and trying to capture a scene of me stopping my bike, but he didn't like where I was turning. He was shooting a scene where he wanted me to pass by, but because he was stopping, I would stop too. It was like the opposite of "we're on the same page," and my husband was getting frustrated all the time. He would say, "I don't want to do video, I don't want to do it anymore”.

“It's not going to work the first time! You have no guts!" I wanted to say back angrily, but I held back. I really didn't want to get into a fight here and throw the shoot out. Even if my husband was losing his temper, I didn't let it get to me. My first priority was to complete the project.

When the other party is angry, I want to be angry too, and I get frustrated.
But the sky was clear. As I pedaled up the hill near the Aoyama Cemetery, I felt refreshed and thought that I liked this feeling of trying to create something.

Finally, we stopped by a cafe in Shimokitazawa to take a break. The shooting ended here.

We had a dinner planned for that night, so the next day, we got all the videos we shot into my
Husband‘s computer, and the next step was to edit them.
Here again, my husband was disappointed when he checked the video he had taken. He found that the hand-held shots were blurry and almost unusable.

There were a few scenes that were shot well. For example, a scene where two BROMPTONs were parked on a small bridge overlooking the train tracks just after departing from Harajuku Station. The trains were coming and going, and a lady walking her dog passed by just in front of the scene, creating a nice atmosphere that could only be captured on video.

However, even if we edited the video as it was, it was unlikely that we would be able to produce a satisfactory video. My husband, who is a photographer by profession, did not want to show the video to the public unless he could make at least a 60-point video in his own way, if not an 80-point video.

We ended up having to do it again at the beginning of the year, twice in fact, for additional filming. Early this year, we also bought a new GoPro, the GoPro12, which is much more powerful, with a much better image stabilization, and a wide-angle lens with much less distortion than the GoPro5, which had a fisheye lens that distorted the view a lot.

The day we combined our schedules to take additional photos, unfortunately, it rained in the afternoon and was cloudy in the morning, so we took a few shots and left. For the rest of the video, my husband shot on the sunny day by himself.

This is the first version that we have managed to cobble together and complete in such a way. Many things have been said about making videos longer than 8 minutes in order to monetize them, but we ignored those things, at least for the time being. We completed the video in a little over 3 minutes, aiming for viewers to watch it without getting bored.

There is no end to the number of things we would have liked to have done here or there, if we had to say what we regret. But I think the video looks like it could have been a lot of fun. Anyway, we decided to take the plunge and launched a YouTube channel.

If you are at all interested, we would be happy to take a look.

The starting scene was reshot many times. In the end, the footage was cut in the edit.
