鳥取県倉吉市に200年以上続く備後屋という玩具工房があります。創業は江戸時代後期、1781年から玩具を作られています。
工房付近は昔、商家が多く紙を使って帳簿をつけたり文を出したりと紙を使う機会が多かった土地柄です。そういった紙を再利用して備後屋では張り子玩具にして、子供の玩具に持たせたという記録がありました。
張り子とは木型に和紙を張り重ね、木型から張り子を抜き取り、胡粉で下地を塗り、染料や日本絵具で彩色し、膠で艶出しした張り子細工です。
Bingo-ya is a toy workshop in Kurayoshi City, Tottori Prefecture, that has been operating for over 200 years. Founded in the late Edo period, the company has made toys since 1781.
The area around the workshop used to be bustling with many merchant families who used paper to keep books and write letters. It is said that Bingo-ya reused that paper to make hariko papier-mâché toys for children.
Hariko is a Japanese papier-mâché craft. To make hariko, paper is stretched over a wooden mold, the paper-mâché is removed from the wooden mold, the base is coated with gofun (white paint made from crushed shells), the paper is colored with Japanese paints, and finally, the paper is glazed with glue.
使用される和紙は楮（こうぞ）を原料にした紙が多く、繊維が長いのが特徴です。張り合わせる作業の時、和紙を裂いた時に繊維が長い為、毛羽立ちが良いので貼り重ねると時に継ぎ目がわかりにくくなります。貼り重ねる時に凹凸が目立つと仕上がりが綺麗に仕上がらないので下地となる貼る作業は繊細で細かい仕事になります。曲面部分や入り組んだ部分を綺麗に紙を重ねて強度を出し、木型から面を外して胡粉（ごふん）を塗り、多種の筆を使い分けて彩色して完成になります。
The washi paper that Bingo-ya usually uses is made from kozo (mulberry tree). Kozo is characterized by its long fibers. The long, fluffy kozo fibers are revealed when the paper is torn. When pasted together, they blend seamlessly. The result will be less than hoped for if an uneven surface arises during the pasting process. That is why this delicate, detailed step is critical. The intricate and curved parts are neatly layered with paper for extra support. After it is removed from the mold, it is painted with gofun. Finally, a variety of brushes are used to add color.
起き上がりのようにバランスを崩しても立ち直るよう足元に重しを入れています。兎は多産であることから子授け・安産や子孫繁栄などの意味合いがあります、赤色は厄除けや運気をあげるとの事。
子供が怪我や病気をしないで無事に育ってほしいという願いを込めて、製作されています。

The color red is said to ward off evil and bring good luck. They are also made with the hope that children will grow up healthy without falling ill or getting injured.
