October 19, 2021： 養老孟司さん、講話、英語学習、動機が大事、Noteへの投稿 (Takesih Yoro, His Talks on YouTube, Learning English, Motivation, Posting on Note)

 I have enjoyed the talks by Takeshi Yoro, a retired anatomist, on YouTube. In particular, his talk about learning English much interested me. According to him, learning English requires motivation. Late Donald Keene acquired Japanese in only three years because his job required Japanese skills. In Japan, more and more children have learnt English, but their success depends on their motivation.
 As he said, when I began to learn English, I was motivated by a desire to read Time, a magazine, and engage in overseas business. Since then, around forty years have passed. But I am still motivated to learn English and have posted my English article on Note every day. The number of the articles exceeds 100, but the quality is far inferior to the English translation of Tensei Jingo (VOX POPULI, VOX DEI), a column published by the Asahi Shimbun Newspaper. The gap is my current motivation to learn English.

　養老孟司さんのYouTubeの講話が面白い。養老さんによると、英語が身につくかどうかはモチベーション次第らしい。故ドナルドキーンさんは、仕事で日本語が必要になったため、必死に勉強して、3ヶ月で習得したそうだ。日本では、小さいころから英語を学ぶ子供が増えているが、英語を取得できるかどうかは本人のモチベーション次第のようだ。
　確かに、ボクが英語を勉強するようになったのも、動機あった。学生時代に、Timeが読めるようになりたい、海外に関わる仕事がしたいという動機。それから40年近くが経過するが、今でも、英語に対する興味は薄れず、毎日Noteを投稿している。英文Noteの投稿数も100を越えたが、天声人語の英訳にはまだまだ及ばない。このギャップが今のモチベーションだ。
