October 11, 2021：オランダの思い出、通称名の廃止、「にほん」、「にっぽん」 (My Memories of the Netherlands, “Holland”, “Nihon”, “Nippon”)
My memories of when I was in the Netherlands are Het Loo Palace and the Kröller-Müller Museum. Het Loo Palace is located around 100km away from Amsterdam, the capital, and was the first palace I visited in Europe. I was so impressed by it that I went there several times afterwards. The Kröller-Müller Museum is said to be a model for the Hakone Open Air Museum and exhibits many sculptures in the garden.
Come to think of it, the Dutch government made a bold decision, as a part of its brand strategy, to unify the official English name for the country into the Netherlands and to ditch its nickname “Holland”. I admire it for such a bold decision. Now could be time to unify the Japanese pronunciation of Japan into “Nihon” or “Nippon”.
オランダの思い出と言えば、ヘットロー宮殿とクレラー・ミュラー美術館。ヘットロー宮殿は首都のアムステルダムから100km程のところにあります。宮殿を観るのが初めてで、感動して、何度か訪問した記憶があります。なお、今は閉館になっているようです。
クレラー・ミュラー美術館は、箱根にある彫刻の森美術館のモデルになったと言われる美術館です。彫刻の森美術館のように屋外に彫刻が展示されています。
そういえば、オランダ政府は英語の国名を”the Netherlands”に統一し、通称名の”Holland”を廃止した。オランダ政府のブランド戦略らしい。通称名とは言え、大胆な決断に敬服する。日本も「にほん」と「にっぽん」の統一くらいは検討してもいいのではないかと思う。
