July 9, 2022: To Switzerland on Business, Official Languages (仕事でスイスへ、公用語)
After we stayed in Paris for two days, we safely returned to Japan. I luckily had a chance to work in the Netherlands four years later and the UK seven years later. While staying in Europe, I had a lot of visits to Switzerland on business. Switzerland mainly has three official languages. It has had impacts from its neighbouring great nations and the Swiss Alps, which crosses from west to east.
The eastern part of the country is the German-speaking area. It is close to Germany and has Zurich, the country's biggest city. The western part of the country is the French-speaking one. It is close to France and has Geneva, the second biggest city. The southern part of the country is the Italian-speaking one. It is close to Italy, and Lugano is the centre of the area.
I had customers in all three areas. Two of them were in the German-speaking part were in Winterthur and Geroldswil. I used to visit them by train from Zurich. I had one customer in the French-speaking part. It was by beautiful Lake Leman. I had taken a direct train from Zurich to Geneva a few times. It was a three-hour comfortable trip.
パリで2日滞在し、無事日本に帰国しました。帰国から4年後、念願かなってオランダに、7年後には英国に駐在する機会がありました。駐在時はスイスに度々商談で訪れました。
スイスは地域によって公用語が違います。隣接する大国の言語の影響を受けているようです。またスイスの中央横断するスイスアルプスの影響もあるのでしょう。スイスの東部は、ドイツ語圏です。ドイツに近く、スイス最大の都市・チューリッヒがあります。スイスの西部はフランス語圏です。フランスに近く、第二の都市・ジュネーブがあります。そして、南部はイタリア語圏です。イタリアに近く、ルガノがこの地域の中心です。
お客さんは、この3つの全ての地域に所在していました。ドイツ語圏ではヴィンタートゥールとゲロルツヴィルに、フランス語圏では美しいレマン湖のほとりにありました。ヴィンタートゥールやゲロルツヴィルへは、チューリッヒから電車で通ったものです。また、チューリッヒからジュネーブまで電車で数回移動したことがあります。3時間弱の快適な旅でした。
