November 8, 2022：Second Foreign Language, French (1)（第二外国語、フランス語（1））

It has been about forty years since I graduated from university. The years have seen a lot of changes. Among them is the one in a popular second foreign language, which surprised me the most. Forty years ago, German was the most popular, followed by French and Spanish. However, it is not now. It is replaced by Chinese.
I chose French since it had euphony, and I longed for France. However, when I began to study it, I found it has so complex a grammar that it is not easy to learn. It has feminine and masculine nouns, and a verb changes according to the subject. Thus, I found that English has far simpler grammar and is easy to understand. At the same time, I understood why English is the most common language in the world.
After I graduated from university, I had no chance to use French. But I began to study it again when I moved to Europe. It helped me enjoy French stays on business and for holidays.

　大学を卒業して40年。その間に、大学も様変わりしたようです。中でも一番びっくりしたのは、第二語学の人気の変化です。40年前は、ドイツ語が一番人気で、フランス語とスペイン語がそれに続きました。ところが、今は違って、中国語が一番人気のようです。
　ボクは、フランス語を選択しました。理由は、美しい音の響きとフランスへの憧れがあったからです。でもいざ勉強してみると、文法の複雑さに苦戦しました。名詞が女性形と男性形に分かれていたり、動詞も主語によって活用します。そして、英語の文法がいかに簡単で分かり易いかを再認識しました。同時に、英語が世界共通語になる理由が分かりました。
　大学卒業後は、フランス語を使う機会はなかったのですが、欧州に駐在する機会を得たので、フランス語を再度勉強することにしました。その結果、数年後には、フランスで現地の人とフランス語で簡単な日常会話ができようになり、フランスへの出張や旅行を楽しめました。
