December 26, 2021：オランダ、友人、シンタクラース、オミクロン （Netherlands, Friend, Sinterklaas, Omicron）
Around this season, my Dutch friend always sends me a Christmas message. We have exchanged such messages for over thirty years. But, unfortunately, I have had no chance to see him face to face since I met him in Germany around fifteen years ago. Nonetheless, he has been sending messages to me, and I appreciate them.
I lived in the Netherlands for three years. One of the days I still remember is December 5th. It is the eve of St. Nicholas' Day and the most important and busiest day to the Dutch. On this day almost thirty years ago, I faced a heavy traffic jam on the way to Amsterdam Airport on business. It was the heaviest I had ever experienced before, and I almost missed the flight.
The Netherlands is now in an extreme situation due to the resurgence fueled by the Omicron variant. I hope that it will end soon.
この時期になると、毎年、オランダの友人からクリスマスメッセージが届きます。彼とは、30年来の付き合いです。15年くらい前にドイツで彼と会って以来、対面の会話はありません。そんな薄い付き合いなのに、毎年メッセージをくれて感謝しています。
オランダで一番記憶に残っている日は12月5日のシンタクラースの前夜祭です。オランダの人にとっては最も重要で、賑わう日です。30年前のこの日、出張で空港へ向かっていた際に大渋滞にはまりました。それまでには見たことのない渋滞で、フライトに乗り遅れかけました。
オランダは、今、オミクロンの感染拡大で深刻な状況にあります。感染の終息を願いばかりです。
