Government officials in Rome say Italy has formally withdrawn from China's trillion-dollar infrastructure programme "the Belt and Road Initiative". Italy had been the first and so far the only major Western country to join the ambitious project despite concerns from the United States. On taking office last year the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called the previous government's decision to join the BRI a "mistake" and voiced her intention to quit. The agreement would have lapsed next March unless Rome decided to renew. Italy has promised to maintain excellent relations despite ending the deal.
