REVIEW:K-BALLET TOKYO's "Mermaid" 08/09/2024(World Premiere)

Since last year, 2023, when I first saw the beautiful ballet costumes designed by the world-famous Serbian costume designer Angelina Atlagić, I completely fell in love with her brilliant artistry. She always delivers wonderful dreamlike experiences with her well-designed ballet costumes.

One of the most memorable scenes of the world premiere of "Mermaid" was definitely the appearance of the Shark, their original character. Shoya Ishibashi, the principal dancer of K-BALLET TOKYO, appeared running with his cape fluttering, making it look as though he was swimming in the ocean. The cape conveyed the movement of water and transported us directly to the underwater world. It was stunning.

Other character I particularly liked were hermit crabs and the aunt of the Mermaid. Their movements and characteristics seemed so lively and fun, showing us how happy they are in the sea.

Principal dancer Nozomi Iijima, who was also a former principal at the Houston Ballet, played the title role of the "Mermaid," while soloist Saya Okubo, who previously danced with the Dutch National Ballet, performed the role of aunt.
One scene which touched to my heart was performed by them, the aunt ordered Mermaid to kill the prince. If she cannot get his love, she will turn into bubbles and be gone. That is why she should kill him with a knife.

This spectacular ballet performance showcased the K-BALLET and Tetsuya Kumakawa's creativity. However, it was the beautiful costumes designed by Angelina Atlagić that impressed us the most. Everything was stunning and eloquent.
