荒The deity enshrined at the Hikawa Shrine, "Susanoo no Mikoto," is the offspring of Izanagi and Izanami, who gave birth to numerous gods across our land, and is the younger brother deity of "Amaterasu Omikami," the enshrined deity of Ise Grand Shrine (Naiku). Susanoo no Mikoto is characterized by a fierce and impulsive nature, often revered as a fearsome deity. Despite his rough demeanor, he ultimately attained a pure heart after enduring hardships, and is worshipped as a deity who purifies sins and embodies freshness and purity.Having accumulated many austerities and atoning for his own sins, Susanoo no Mikoto is particularly renowned for defeating the eight-headed serpent, a water spirit. This act established him as a deity of water, revered for flood control, and his marriage to Kushinadahime made him a deity of abundant harvests and agricultural protection.
Amaterasu Omikami is a deity positioned at the highest level among the countless myriad of deities. She was born from the left eye of Izanagi, and later became the goddess who governs the sun, ruling the celestial realm. Currently, she is enshrined throughout Japan, with Ise Grand Shrine's Naiku serving as her representative shrine. Amaterasu is also the ancestral deity of the imperial family, considered one of the most important deities in Japan. It is believed that she listens to and fulfills all wishes, known as a deity of wish fulfillment.
"Ichirei Shikon" refers to a unique concept of the human soul proposed by Honda Chikamichi, a Shinto scholar during the late Edo period. According to Honda's teachings in the Honda Reigaku school, the human spirit consists of one primary spirit called "Chokurei" (direct spirit) that connects to heaven, along with four additional souls.
According to the Shinto concept of "Ichirei Shikon," which means "one spirit, four souls," the human heart consists of four souls: Nigimitama (harmonious soul), Aramitama (aggressive soul), Sakimitama (fortunate soul), and Kushimitama (mysterious soul). Nigimitama fosters peace and tranquility in dealing with matters, while Aramitama possesses strong power, governing courage and assertiveness. Sakimitama represents devotion and kindness, bringing happiness to others.
奇Tsukuyomi no Mikoto, one of the three noble gods born from Izanagi's purification ritual along with Amaterasu and Susanoo. Revered as the deity of the moon or ruler of the night, Tsukuyomi is associated with governing the moon and was once praised as the deity for counting the lunar calendar based on the movement of the moon.
幸Amaterasu is the highest-ranking deity among the myriad gods, born from Izanagi's left eye. She later became the goddess who rules the celestial world and governs the sun.
