“Letters to the Future" is a regular series of articles in which our members share their thoughts and express their feelings about their work.


Dear Chocolate in the Year 2050

My Dearest Chocolate,

How are you doing in these changing times?

Your irresistible charm has long captivated people of all ages, from the sweet delight cherished by children to the rich, complex flavor that pair perfectly with coffee for adults. Whether enjoyed on its own or as a key ingredient in cakes and other confections, your versatility and appeal are unmatched.

However, it is with concern that I write this letter. There are growing fears that by 2050, chocolate as we know it may become a rarity. The impact of climate change—seen in floods, droughts, diseases, and pests—has increasingly threatened cacao production, the essential ingredient that makes your existence possible...

As the cultivation of cacao becomes more challenging, global demand for chocolate continues to rise, creating a significant imbalance between supply and demand. This not only jeopardizes the future availability of chocolate but also threatens the livelihoods of those who rely on cacao production.

As a member of the ClimateTech industry, I feel a deep responsibility to contribute, even in small ways, to addressing this crisis. Protecting the future of chocolate means safeguarding the joy it brings to people and the jobs it sustains.

Together, we can work towards ensuring that chocolate continues to be a source of happiness for generations to come.

I haven't had the chance to go on a sweets tour recently, and writing this made me suddenly crave some chocolate treats... I'll have to go exploring again soon!
