【Inside beBit】 Management Department - Tomura-san

Inside beBit - A project in which we ask 10 questions about a beBit member's work and personal life. We hope that “Inside beBit” will provide an opportunity to get to know more about the individuals you work with.
In this issue, we asked Tomura-san from the Management Department to answer our questions!

1:Tell us about your background

Born in Chiba in August 1981.
In 1988, I moved to London, England, for my fathers work and attended elementary school ~ middle school there. As I grew up with almost no Japanese friends, I identify as almost entirely British. After returning to Japan, I lived in Chiba while attending school (Keio Futsubu School) in Kanagawa. Starting in high school, I immersed myself in music and started playing percussion instruments.
After graduating from university, I worked in human resources at a major manufacturer.
I then left that job and attended law school. When I graduated, I found beBit.
In March of 2013, I joined the legal department, then moved to Taipei and Shanghai in January of 2014. Since returning to Japan, my job changed every year - not only did I work in legal, I also worked on projects, managed seminars that preceded L&UX, and hosted company-wide meetings and events.
These past few years, I have finally been able to focus on legal work.
Those who have been with beBit for more than a few years may have a strong image of me being the host of the company-wide meetings and year-end parties…

2:Why did you join beBit?

I interviewed for beBit after being introduced by a recruiter and interned without having any prior knowledge.
I was very impressed with the company’s recruiting efforts, even allowing mid-career hires to intern.
Through my background in human resources, I established a rule of thumb that if a company properly assesses people, it can not be a bad company. Because of this, I felt that beBit could not be a bad company and decided to join.
At that point, I still did not know what kind of company beBit was.

3:Please tell us about the work you do at beBit

Currently, my main focus is legal affairs. I am involved in almost all legal matters related to the operation of the company. Although the number of people I directly work with is limited, I am always involved in some aspect of the work everyone is doing.
In addition, I have recently been appointed as the Chief of Personal Information Protection.
Sp, everyone please be sure to protect the information you have.

4:What is the most memorable or rewarding job you’ve done at beBit?

My time in Taipei/Shanghai is filled with memories.
Being involved in the establishment of the Shanghai office may be the most memorable part of my beBit life. I spoke with Fujii-san about this on the in-house radio, so if you’re interested please check it out.

5:Tell us what you value most when working

“Appearance and words”
This was a lesson from my former boss. He taught me that if the appearance is not right people may judge before completely understanding, so it is important to organize how people will see the message before presenting in order to convey the necessary information.
Words have the same effect.

6:How should members communicate when working with you?

Be considerate of  “appearance and words”
I am very irritated when people ask me “was that alright?” I often hear it in my daily life, not just during work, and it irritates me every time.

7:Tell us one thing you like about beBit

There are many interesting good people, and no bad people.

8:Please tell us about your talent, or anything you are proud of

I believe I am relatively skilled at talking (presenting) about the things I like.
I have turned people who had no interest in science fiction into Star Wars fans and made people who know nothing about Harry Potter cry through my storytelling.
If you’re curious about how Harry Potter could make you cry, please free up at least 3 hours of your schedule with me.

9:What do you do during your free time?

The three pillars have always been “games,” “movies,” and “music.” Recently, “parenting” has been added as well.
“Games”: Mainly console games. I still have not been able to get my hands on a PS5, so I have been playing ports and remakes of old games on the Nintendo Switch.
“Movies”: I have been unable to go to movie theaters recently, so I have been watching many movies and dramas on subscription services. While I watch most genres, I especially like science fiction. I love movies with time as the theme. TENET was amazing.
“Music”: I perform music myself. Percussion. Mainly orchestra. I have not played for years due to Covid, but will let everyone know if I ever play in a concert again, so please come watch.
“Parenting”: I spend time playing with my 4 year old son. Recently, he has been very into Ultraman.

10:Tell us about any challenges you would like to attempt

I have reached my yakudoshi (unlucky year) and realized that I’ve grown pretty old, but as my second child (eldest daughter) was born in September, I would like to build up my strength to resist aging for the sake of my children.
I have always been told that people cannot tell my age (In my second year as a new grad at my last job, I was asked if it was my 10th year. Was I bossy??), but from now on, I will try my best to look as young as possible.
