TEENS Kesuke-san's "Developmental Disabilities x Metaverse" AVOS Application Example 1|Quiz Contest

Hello. In my previous article, I introduced you to Kaien Corporation's Educational Division TEENS, Kesuke-san, who appeared as a guest in our virtual interview introducing AVOS introduction and utilization case studies, and the business of TEENS.

In this article, we will discuss how Kesuke-san uses AVOS (Metaverse) to support children with developmental disabilities, the background behind the introduction of AVOS, and examples of its use! The interview regarding this article is also available on YouTube. Please take a look if you like. (Click here to watch the full version of the video)

The reason for introducing AVOS

Kesuke-san has been using AVOS at TEENS' Shigoto Mirai Juku since June of this year (2022). Shigoto Mirai Juku" was launched as an online service even before AVOS was introduced. What made you decide to use AVOS when there were many other tools available?

"We had been using a videoconferencing tool for a while, which had the advantage of allowing us to see each other's faces, but about 80% of the children would turn the video off. I felt a little lonely and wanted to make the program more face-to-face, so I was looking for other good tools. That's when we came across AVOS, which allows us to use the Metaverse for free, and decided to install it!" Keisuke.

Thank you very much for finding AVOS!

Changes and new discoveries after the introduction of AVOS

So, have there been any changes in the children's reactions after the actual introduction of AVOS?

In a videoconference, at least Kesuke-san and other management staff members turn on the video and show their faces to participate, but in AVOS, all management staff and children participate without showing their faces because they communicate using avatars in the metaverse space. In other words, "everyone is equal," according to Kesuke-san.

AVOS has also been used to find out that a child who did not speak during a videoconference has started to speak, or that a very energetic child is actually walking around in the metaverse space all the time, even though you could not tell when the video was turned off. According to Kesuke-san, using the metaverse is like actually meeting the person, and you get a better sense of who they are. You can understand more about the person you are talking to. I see. That is very interesting.

Let's take a look at some examples of actual use of AVOS.

AVOS Application Example 1 "Quiz Contest

Kesuke-sam himself had no experience with Metaverse, so he decided to hold a "quiz contest" to have fun with children. So, he held a "quiz contest" for the children to have fun.

Specifically, four choices are prepared, and those who think the answer is A will move their avatar to the A classroom, and those who think the answer is B will move to the B classroom. When the correct answer is announced, Kesuke will also move his classroom to appear in front of the children to liven up the event! In videoconferencing, you just write the answer in the chat room and that's it, but in the Metaverse, you can play while moving around in the space, which was fun for the children.

In addition, while it is difficult to use a number of classrooms in a real school, in the Metaverse they can use them freely, and they have found AVOS easy to use in terms of preparation and management.

Children's reactions and observations after using AVOS

Kesuke-san says that he used AVOS for the first time through the quiz competition. He noticed some things through the operation.

Interview scene; all AVOS members will participate with their avatars.

I thought, "People's enjoyment changes considerably depending on whether there is movement or not. There was also a child who moved around so much that when other children stopped because they didn't know how to operate the controls, he would quickly walk up to them and say, 'This way,' and take them away.” Keisuke-san.

It is heartwarming to see such mutual help and communication between children. It is heartwarming to see such help and communication among the children. The majority of the children also commented that this one (AVOS) was better because they could move.

On the contrary, there was another interesting thing. While some children who did not speak in the videoconference did so in AVOS, others said they were nervous. While Kesuke-san himself felt that it was easier to talk in the Metaverse because it felt like a game, the child told him that he had to look at the other person because it was more face-to-face, and that even though it was not a face, he was nervous because he thought it was a person.

It is clear that each child feels differently. In any case, these reactions may be an indication that the metaverse is "getting closer to the real world.

In this issue, we introduced an example of AVOS use by TEENS Kesukei, "Quiz Contest". How was it? In the next issue, we will talk about the "Worries Consultation Center" which fosters independence in children with developmental disabilities. Please read the next article as well.
