In every field of human endeavor, he that is first must perpetually live in the white light of publicity. 

　人間の営みにおいて、頂点にある人は、どの分野であっても、絶えず注目の光の中で生きなければなりません。

Whether the leadership be vested in a man or in a manufactured product, emulation and envy are ever at work. In art, in literature, in music, in industry, the reward and the punishment are always the same. The reward is widespread recognition; the punishment, fierce denial and detraction.

　ある人物や製品が主導的な地位を得ると、張り合う人や妬む人が必ず出てきます。芸術、文学、音楽そして産業分野においても、褒美と罰は、常にともにあります。褒美は名が凡く知れ渡ること、そして罰とは、拒絶反応と誹謗中傷です。

When a man’s work becomes a standard for the whole world, it also becomes a target for the shafts of the envious few. If his work be mediocre, he will be left severely alone – if he achieves a masterpiece, it will set a million tongues a-wagging.

　ある人物の業績が世の標準になると、それは妬みを抱く少数の人が攻撃の矛先を向けるターゲットになります。人並みの業績は見向きすらされないのに、優れた業績になると口さがない人々の好き勝手な発言の餌食となってしまうのです。

Jealousy does not protrude its forked tongue at the artist who produces a commonplace painting. Whatsoever you write, or paint, or play, or sing, or build, no one will strive to surpass or to slander you unless your work be stamped with the seal of genius.

　嫉妬は、ありふれた作品しか描けない画家に向かって、その悪魔のような舌をチラつかせたりはしません。あなたが書き、描き、演じ、歌い、打ち立てたものが何であれ、天才の刻印がなければ、誰もあなたに挑戦したり罵ったりはしないのです。

Long, long after a great work or a good work has been done, those who are disappointed or envious, continue to cry out that it cannot be done.

　偉大な業績が成し遂げられ、素晴らしい作品が制作されたずっとずっと後になって、失望する者、妬む者だけが「こんなの無理」と呻き続けることでしょう。
