実践ビジネス英語2020年11月号下の聞きどころ
NHKラジオ実践ビジネス英語 2020年11月号の下、Lesson 14 Employee Engagement Surveyの聞きどころ、というか自分が聞いてて気になったところを、勉強になるかもしれないので書き出してみる。
(1) p36
Here's the situation. Our CEO has tasked me with revamping our morale survey.
our moralが何言ってるか聞き取れなかった。our mがI'mに聞こえてしまい。
(2) p40
Let me put it this way:
質問に答えるときの前置きで「つまりこういうことです」と言っている。
It's also a good way to identify areas where there's room for improvement.
気に入った表現。whereに気を取られてthere'sが耳に入ってこなかった。
All sorts of things.
All sortsがAlso it'sって聞こえてしまって？となった。一部聞き間違えて意味不明に陥るというのはよくあるパターン。
(3) p44
The job market is much more fluid, and younger workers are less inclined to feel a sense of loyalty to the company.
be inclined to -で「-する傾向がある」という意味。be less inclined toという表現を気に入った。
Steps need to be taken to address whatever it is that's causing these employees to have a low level of engagement.
cause ~ to -で「~に-させる」という意味。長く感じる文章で気に入った。whatever it is that'sがちょっとピンと来ないが雰囲気で分かる感じ。
The question that managers have to ask is whether workers believe working for the company offers them opportunities to advance their careers - or whether they see it as a professional dead end.
長い。whether - or whether -って言うんだなと勉強になった。
(4) p48
Ask them if they were to quit tomorrow, what the reason would be.
if ~ were to -で「仮に-するとしたら」という意味。使えるようになりたい。
That's an interesting - and potentially provocative - question.
provocativeは「人を挑発する」という意味らしい。動詞のprovokeが怒らせるとか挑発するという意味。ちなみにrevokeは免許などを取り消すという意味。invokeはプログラムを呼び出すとか発動させるという意味。evokeは笑いや感情などを呼び起こすという意味。
We'd ask this question to get a sense as to whether our employees feel like they're here to stay - or if there are underlying issues that are making them look elsewhere for work.
長いしいろいろ引っかかるポイントがあって難しい。get a senseでなんとなく感じ取る、感触を得るという意味。そのあとのas to whether -は「-かどうか」という意味。この表現使いたい。feel like -で「-な気分」。making them lookのmakeは使役動詞っていうのか。look elsewhere forの部分はelsewhereがここに入ってるのが気になった。
(5) p52
The old adage about all work and no play also applies to the business world, in my opinion. If people don't get at least some sense of enjoyment from their work, they won't be as satisfied and productive as they could be.
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.という格言はAll work and no playだけで通じるらしい。apply to -で「-に当てはまる」という意味。don't get at least some sense of enjoymentで「少なくとも何かしらの楽しみを感じない」。be as - as ~ could beは「この上なく-」という意味。使えたらいいなと思う表現が多い。
The distinction between work and play is a false dichotomy. They are not necessarily mutually exclusive categories.
dichotomyは二分法という意味なので、false dichotomyで「誤った二分法」。その次の文章がfalse dichotomyをただ説明してるだけのトートロジーみたいな文章だけど英語の勉強になってうれしい。
The right dose of fun can help break up the monotony of work, and do a lot to improve employees' engagement level.
doseは投薬量なのでdose of funはおもしろい表現と感じた。helpも使役動詞か。monotonyは単調さという意味。
Listening Challenge 1 p58
Listening Challenge 1のリスニングは難しかった。でも仕事で使う機会がありそうな表現がいくつか出てきた。
I've got a draft for it, but it's not in any shape to be presented formally to anyone yet. It's got a lot of notes that might be hard for anyone but me to read.
not in any shape to be presented formallyとか、hard for anyone but me to readとか、言ってみたい。
It doesn't have to be in finished form yet.
完成してなくていいですよ。
