JR神田駅界隈 横木安良夫 上野、御徒町、秋葉原と続いて今回は神田駅界隈だ。神田といえば小川町や神保町、神田明神があり、今は埼玉に移動したが交通博物館もあった。JRの神田駅はその交通博物館以外、そのどことも離れていて、駅前に飲食店がたちならぶ以外は、オフィスビルばかりの無個性な場所に見える。かつては老舗も多かったが今や人気の秋葉原や、日本橋に挟まれた空白地帯だ。 何より、銀座4丁目から日本橋から続く日本のメインストリート、中央通りが、無理やり神田駅を斜め45度に突っ切る。その駅下のガードが、秋葉原、上野方面へと山手線の内側に入れ替わる。そのため道路も、駅ビルの配置だろうか、不自然で落ち着かず、周辺を歩くと方向感覚を失いそうになる。 駅の近くの、靖国通りと交差する須田町交差点は、広々として僕が中学生ぐらいまでは都電の一大ターミナルだった。いまやごく平凡な無個性な交差点に見える。 僕にとって、須田町といえば、鉄道模型のカワイモデルが懐かしい。日本最古の鉄道模型の老舗だ。天賞堂や、カツミ、エンドウ、宮沢などが有名だったけれど、通っていた中学から近くなのでカワイ模型も時々覗いた。高価で品数もすくなく、とても子供が入るような店ではなかったが、こじんまりとしたHOゲージの鉄道レイアウトがあったことを思い出す。

This month's photo book, CRP FOTO, features the area around JR Kanda Station on the Yamanote Line. The book includes the January photos of 10 photographers and is 300 pages in total. It's free, so please take a look. The guest photographer is Ari Hatzusawa, and the cover photo is by Yuichi Oide. There will also be a photo shoot and book event on May 20th in the area around JR Hamamatsucho Station.
Starting with the area around Kanda Station, it's followed by Yoko-Yuki Yasuo, Ueno, Okachimachi, and Akihabara. Kanda is known for its historic spots such as Ogawamachi, Kanda-jinja Shrine, and the former location of the Transportation Museum, which has since moved to Saitama. However, besides the restaurants that line the station front, the area is now characterized by bland office buildings. While it used to have many long-established businesses, it's now an empty space squeezed between the popular areas of Akihabara and Nihonbashi.
Above all, the main street of Japan, Chuo-dori, which runs from Ginza 4-chome to Nihonbashi, awkwardly intersects Kanda Station at a 45-degree angle. The guardrail under the station changes to the inside of the Yamanote Line towards Akihabara and Ueno, which may be why the roads are laid out unnaturally, and you may lose your sense of direction while walking around the area.
Sudacho intersection, which intersects with Yasukuni-dori near the station, used to be a large terminal for the streetcar when I was in junior high school. However, it now looks like an ordinary and featureless intersection. For me, Sudacho reminds me of Kawai Model, the oldest model train shop in Japan. While shops like Tenshodo, Katsumi, Endo, and Miyazawa were famous, Kawai Model was also nearby my junior high school, so I occasionally stopped by. It was a small shop with expensive and few items, not really suitable for children, but I remember the compact HO gauge railway layout they had.
The 10 photographers featured in the book are Ari Hatzusawa, Teruyo Fukumoto, Koji Sudo, Satoshi Mizushima, Tatsuya Sato, Terumasa Arima, Yuichi Oide, Yukiko Suzuki, Yoshinori Kamei, and Alao Yokogi.
