Episode 5_The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House Filming Locations You Can Visit

日本語版/Japanese version
Netflix drama The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House was filmed in Kyoto.
Below are some filming locations you can visit in Kyoto and my recommendations.
And trivia about Kyoto culture.

Please visit Kyoto and find your favorite.
I hope everyone likes Japanese culture and Kyoto.

Episode 5 - 02:10

Tsurukoma and Sumire were brushing their teeth at the bathroom sink and getting ready to go out.
A bottle of camellia oil(椿油) was placed in front of the mirror.

Maiko-san keeps her hair lustrous with camellia oil.
If you like to try camellia oil, Kazurasei-Rouho(かづら清老舗) is my recommendation.

https://www.kazurasei.co.jp/

Not only camellia oil, but we can also purchase Kanzashi hairpins(かんざし) and kimono accessories at Kazurasei-Rouho.

Episode 5 - 03:50

Kiyo cooked Tempura. (天ぷら)
I’ve never been, but Tempura Yasaka Endo(天ぷら八坂圓堂) is a famous fancy tempura restaurant.

Episode 5 - 06:30

Azusa ran infront of Kanikakuni Monument. (かにかくに碑)

November 8th, Kanikakuni Matsuri is held.
Kanikakuni Matsuri is an event to remember Isamu Yoshii (1886-1960), who loved Gion and wrote many tanka poems and plays.
Geisha-san and Maiko-san offer white chrysanthemums to the Kanikakuni Monument.
We can see Geisha-san and Maiko-san around the Kanikakuni Monument.

Please respect Gion's rules.

Episode 5 - 08:30

Kiyo bought Japanese-style croquettes(コロッケ) at a meat shop.
It's Okada-Shokai. (岡田商会)
I really like this croquette, highly recommend it.

Episode 5 - 08:40

Kikuno, Kotono, and Sumire met school trip students at Gion Tatsumi Bash
Episode 1 - 24:30 is the same place.

Episode 5 - 08:50

SAKU family crest

In this drama, cooking, acting, music, etc, attract us very much. I think that Mr. Yohei Taneda's delicate art and settings are also one of the attractions.

SAKU means "New Moon" in Japanese.
Shirakawa River flows through the Gion area.
I guess that production designer Mr. Taneda created the Saku family crest(家紋) with the moon and the river.

We can see the family crest of SAKU clearly on the Kotono's black OBI edge.
Making the OBI with the family crest takes a long time.

Please find other SAKU family crests in this drama series.

Episode 5 - 09:10

Kiyo put this Tenugui(手ぬぐい) on her forehead as a headband.

The same Tenugui
Episode 7 - 05:00
Episode 9 - 29:00

Episode 5 - 09:20

Yoshino put TSUBAME Sauce(ツバメソース) on croquette.
TSUBAME Sauce is Kyoto-oriented Worcestershire sauce.

We can get it at Gion Fujimuraya. (祇園藤村屋)

Episode 5 - 13:40

Azusa and Professor Tanabe walked down Shinbashi Dori Street (新橋通), talking about Iwai's marriage proposal to Momoko.

Episode 5 - 19:10

Kenta put the lucky charm(Kanauwa)(叶う輪) in his baseball bag that Kiyo had sent to him.
The Kanauwa is a white ball with light blue strings.
Please check Episode 4 - 07:00, Kiyo holding Kanauwa.

Episode 5 - 21:50

Momoko and Sumire arrived at Arashiyama boat wharf.
I’m not sure where is the restaurant which serves traditional Japanese dishes on the boat but I guess it's Hoshinoya Kyoto.
Momoko and Sumire headed west, Hoshinoya Kyoto is located around there.
Hoshinoya Kyoto has several boats and can arrange Geiko-san.

Episode 5 - 37:00

Kiyo and Sumire passed by Gion Tatsumi Bash. (祇園巽橋)

Gion Tatsumi Bash is a place that appears many times in this drama.
This is also the bridge where Sumire and Kiyo took a photo with Momoko on their junior high school trip to Kyoto.
It is also on this bridge that Sumire and Kiyo met Maiko-san when they moved from Aomori to Kyoto.
This is also the bridge where Sumire could not call out to Kiyo and started walking a different path after seeing Kiyo's back when Kiyo was told to give up Maiko-san.
It is also on this bridge that Sumire took a picture of school excursion students and her sisters. Kiyo was proud of Sumire, who made a fine start as Maiko-san, a year ago Sumire was a junior high student who longed to be a Maiko-san.

Gion Tatsumi Bash is always reflected in the essential points of the story.

Episode 5 - 39:00

Kiyo fried chicken for Sumire, it's KARAAGE(からあげ) in Japanese.

This is Ms. Nami Iijima(飯島奈美さん)'s KARAAGE recipe.
Please see the pictures from 35/84 to 70/84.
She is the food stylist of this drama.

I would not list where not for tourists.
