ロックの歴史をプレイリストで学ぶ 1956 Apple Music

Elvis Presley & Dog

1956年はロカビリーがジャンルとして花開いた年でした。1月にCarl Perkinsが"Blue Suede Shoes"を、Elvis Presleoが"Heartbreak Hotel"をリリース。

この2曲は1956年を代表する曲であると共にロカビリーのクラシックとして現在まで親しまれている名曲です。

それに続きEddie Bond, Janis Martin, Warren Smith, Roy Orbison, Gene Vincent, Wanda Jackson, Eddie Cochran, Sonny Burgess, Charlie Feathers, Johnny Burnetteなどが登場します。

たった1年でこれ程のロカビリークラシックが生まれました。(記載してないだけで他にも多数存在)

その着火点はElvis Presleyでしょう。彼は1954年の夏にサンレコードより"That's All Right"でデビューします。この曲はArthur Crudupのカバーでした。またドラムス不在であった為にベース音が目立っています。

前回Chuck Berryと彼が似ていると表現しました。Chuck Berryは白人男性と聞き間違えられるほどR&Bにカントリーの要素を取り入れロックンロールを創造しました。ElvisカントリーにR&Bの要素を取り入れロカビリーを創造します。

1956年にはRCAビクターに移籍して"Heartbreak Hotel"をリリース。これが大ヒットした上にJohn Lennonを始めとしたロックの偉人たちの源流となりました。現代の耳で聴くとピンと来ませんが当時の白人聴衆にはアコースティックブルース的な演奏と歌唱が衝撃的であったのでしょう。

恐らくテレビの影響もあったのではないかと推測します。特徴的なヴィジュアルに卑猥な腰つき。1956年はロック=不良的な式が成り立った最初の年でもありました。

Gene Vincentは革ジャンのツナギを着て歌い当時の不良少年たちの心を掴みます。日本でも来日公演を歌うなど人気になり山下敬二郎が彼を真似て革ジャンのツナギスタイルで歌う最初の日本人ロッカーともなりました。
