Guiding Growth with Nina: An Account Executive's Path

Hi Readers,
This is Omar from Akamai’s recruitment team.

In my journey to get to know some of our APJ talent, I had the pleasure of meeting Nina, one of our dedicated Account Executives in Taiwan. Nina joined the Akamai team in February 2024, bringing with her a wealth of experience working with Akamai’s solutions. This prior experience ensured a smooth transition into Akamai’s culture and operations. Despite her familiarity with the company, Nina was pleasantly surprised by the warmth and helpfulness of her colleagues.

Currently working on the partner side, Nina speaks highly of her supervisor, who she finds exceptionally supportive. Whether it’s jumping on a quick call, answering questions through internal communication tools, or even via WhatsApp, her supervisor is always ready to assist.

One of the standout aspects of Nina’s experience is how her manager handles requests for assistance. Instead of immediately providing solutions, her manager first asks for Nina’s input and thoughts on how she would approach the challenge. This method not only offers valuable advice and feedback but also fosters a work environment conducive to growth and collaboration. Nina finds this approach particularly beneficial for her personal development.

Nina's journey at Akamai underscores the importance of a supportive and collaborative work environment. Her positive experiences with her colleagues and supervisor highlight the company's commitment to nurturing talent and encouraging professional growth.

A New Level of Organization

After joining Akamai, Nina noticed that she needed to re-evaluate her organizational approach. Unlike her previous role, which focused solely on reseller activities, she now juggles negotiations phases with both clients and resellers. This dual responsibility requires meticulous time management for Nina. To stay on top of her task, Nina dedicates time to prioritize and organize her unfinished task or any miscellaneous activity she needs to complete. She developed this bit as a student, which helps her maintain efficiency and focus

As an Account Executive, Nina’s typically day or week revolves around nurturing and building relations with ongoing clients. Nina prioritizes regular check-ins with clients to understand their evolving needs and concerns.  Nina broke down her typical week and day in an easy format for me to understand.

  6. Developing upselling and cross-selling strategies
    - A significant part of being an account executive is developing and implementing strategies to upsell or cross-sell additional products or services to existing clients. It not only boosts revenue but also adds value to the client’s business.

Flexibility and Client Engagement

Nina enjoys a level of flexibility that significantly enhances her work-life balance and productivity. Her role allows her to manage her schedule with remarkable efficiency, which is essential in her client-facing position.

Nina strategically arranges her client meetings to maximize her time and minimize travel. She typically plans her day by scheduling meetings with clients who are located close to each other, aiming to visit two clients each morning. This approach not only streamlines her workload but also ensures she can maintain strong, personal relationships with her clients.

Between client meetings, Nina often takes advantage of the flexibility in her role by stopping at a local cafe or a shop offering a wifi connection. These breaks allow her to relax, recharge, and catch up on work in a comfortable environment. It's a routine that blends productivity with a bit of personal time, keeping her day balanced and enjoyable.

Despite the benefits of working remotely, Nina prefers the structure and focus she finds in the office. She chooses to work from the office three to four days a week. Being in the office offers her the opportunity to interact directly with her colleagues, seek advice, and collaborate on projects. This combination of flexibility and structured office time exemplifies how modern work environments can be tailored to meet both personal and professional needs. For Nina, this balance is key to maintaining high productivity and job satisfaction at Akamai.

Nina does take advantage of the FlexBase program and works from home when she needs to focus on detailed paperwork or have uninterrupted meetings with the deal desk. Typically, Nina will work from home during the busiest times of the month, when crunching numbers and detailed tasks require her full attention.

Continuous Learning and Growth

Akamai has been instrumental in Nina’s professional development. Nina expressed to me that her supervisor has gone above and beyond to assist her career growth. For example, her supervisor has even arranged for an engineer to teach Nina in depth about Akamai products, enabling her to speak knowledgeably with clients. Daily support from her supervisor and engineers helps Nina stay informed and confident as an Account Executive.

Shout-Out of Appreciation to Colleagues

What really stood out to me while interacting with Nina was her gratitude to her manager.

Nina expressed to me that she is immensely grateful for the unwavering support and guidance she has received from her colleagues during her initial months at Akamai. She emphasized how their willingness to share their experiences, offer insights, and provide encouragement has been invaluable. This fellowship and collective knowledge have not only eased her transition into the company but also inspired her to strive for excellence. Nina's heartfelt appreciation for her colleagues, especially her manager, highlights the collaborative and nurturing culture at Akamai, which has played a pivotal role in her professional growth and personal satisfaction.

In summary, Nina’s experience with Akamai exemplifies the adaptability and opportunities inherent in remote and at office work. With the support of her colleagues, the flexibility to control her schedule, and a strong emphasis on time management, Nina has successfully cultivated a productive and fulfilling work environment that prioritizes self-development.
