作曲ノート

　私がつくる音楽のほとんどは、日本のことばや文学作品の「おとない」に依る。《水の声》は、泉鏡花の短編小説『海の使者』が、インスピレーションの源だ。『海の使者』の「きりりりり」「きり、から、きい、から」「さっ、さっ、さっ」などの擬音を、ヴァイオリンの音で翻訳するように作曲した。第四弦からes・d・f・eの変則調弦で、終始、ハーモニクスとホワイトノイズの間を揺らいで奏する。橋がきしむ音なのか、岡沙魚（おかはぜ）の鳴き声なのか、奇妙な擬音は微妙に変化しながら幾度も繰り返され、水の流れを呼び寄せる。たちまち渦を巻くようにして幻想的な光景がわっと立ちあらわれ──たかと思えば、あとに残るは月の光ばかり。
　ついでながら、のちに、《水の曲》を独奏パートとした、独奏ヴァイオリンとアンサンブルのための《影も溜らず》を作曲したことを付け加えておく。

Composer's note

　Most of my music is derived from Japanese words and literary works. Kyoka Izumi (1873-1939) is one of my favorite Japanese novelists. This composition, Mizu no Koe (Water Voice), was written based on the narrativity of his “Messenger of The Sea.” In this literary work, Kyoka adopted several short characteristic terms of onomatopoeia, such as きりきり (kirikiri), きりりりり (kiriririri), きいから (kiikara), しゅっ (shu), etc. The shifting aspects of water, through overlapping onomatopoeia, instigate the narrative. The work evokes a vivid and detailed landscape, both visually and aurally, in which the energy of water forms, flows, shimmers, swirls, and disappears. I tried to compose this piece by translating those onomatopoeias into musical sounds by a violin.
　Mizu no Koe (Water Voice) was initially written for Awai-Za “Mirages of Floating World” as a part of TOKYO EXPERIMENTAL FESTIVAL Vol.9 - Performance [Recommended Program] at Tokyo Arts And Space (former Tokyo Wonder Site) and the first performed by Shungo Mise, one of the members of Awai-Za. After the first performance, I made my revision again and again. I should note, incidentally, that I later compose Shadowless for solo violin and eight musicians, which uses this piece as the solo violin part.
