ライティングで使える結果を表す表現5選

こちらの記事はシチュエーションで学ぶ英文法シリーズ第3弾として
書きことばで結果を表す表現について説明しています。

時系列に沿って話をする際には、
「結果として」という表現を頻繁に使われますが、口語表現で使われる「so」はカジュアルな文脈でよく使われる言葉ですが、アカデミックライティングでは避けた方が良いとされています。

①as a result

シチュエーション
・フォーマルな文章やエッセイで、結果を明確にするために使用
・文頭や文中で使用され、論理的な結果を示す。

例文
Urbanization has led to the expansion of cities into natural habitats. As a result, there is a significant increase in human-wildlife conflicts.
都市化によって、自然の生息地に都市が拡大している。その結果、人間と野生動物の衝突が著しく増加している。

Public health campaigns have successfully raised awareness about the dangers of smoking. As a result, smoking rates have declined in many countries, improving overall public health.
公衆衛生キャンペーンは、喫煙の危険性に対する認識を高めることに成功した。その結果、多くの国で喫煙率が低下し、公衆衛生全体が改善された。

The lack of affordable healthcare options means that many individuals cannot receive necessary medical treatment, and as a result, preventable diseases are becoming more prevalent.
手ごろな値段で医療を受けられる選択肢がないため、多くの人が必要な治療を受けられず、その結果、予防可能な病気が蔓延している。

解答

1. The government increased taxes last year. As a result, people have more money to spend.

   • 誤り: 増税により、人々の可処分所得は通常減少します。「As a result」を使って増税の結果として可処分所得が増えるのは矛盾しています。

   • 訂正: The government increased taxes last year. As a result, people have less money to spend.
     more→lessに変更。増税により、可処分所得が減少するのが一般的です。
     

2. The company started selling a new product. As a result, their sales have gone up.

   • 正しい: 新製品の販売開始が売上の増加に繋がることは論理的で、自然な結果です。 新製品の導入は、売上が増加する直接的な原因となることが多いため、この文の「As a result」の使い方は正しいです。
     

3. There has been very little rain for months. As a result, farmers have had a very good harvest.

   • 誤り: 長期間の干ばつは通常、農作物の収穫に悪影響を与えます。「As a result」を使って干ばつの結果として良い収穫が得られるのは矛盾しています。

   • 訂正: There has been very little rain for months. As a result, farmers have had a poor harvest.
     very good→poorに変更。干ばつにより、収穫量が減少するのが一般的です。
     

②as a consequence / consequently

シチュエーション
・原因と結果を論理的に繋げるときに使用する。
・影響や結果を強調する。

例文
The rise in housing prices has made home ownership unattainable for many young families, and as a consequence, the rental market is becoming increasingly competitive and expensive.
住宅価格の高騰は、多くの若い家族にとって持ち家を持つことを不可能にし、その結果、賃貸市場の競争は激化し、価格も高くなっている。

Many companies have moved their operations overseas to cut costs, and as a consequence, local job markets have suffered, leading to higher unemployment rates.
多くの企業がコスト削減のために海外に拠点を移し、その結果、地元の雇用市場は苦境に立たされ、失業率の上昇につながっている。

Public transportation infrastructure has not kept pace with population growth; consequently, traffic congestion and commuting times have worsened significantly.
公共交通インフラが人口増加に追いついていないため、交通渋滞と通勤時間が大幅に悪化している

The rise of social media has changed the way people interact and receive information; consequently, misinformation and fake news have become major societal issues.
ソーシャルメディアの台頭は人々の交流や情報の受け取り方を変え、その結果、誤報やフェイクニュースが大きな社会問題となっている。

   結果として、伝統的な小売店は売り上げが減少しています。
   
   The rise of online shopping has led to a significant number of people making purchases on the internet. As a consequence, traditional retail stores are experiencing a decline in sales.
   

2. オンラインショッピングの便利さが消費者に支持されているため、
   結果として、宅配業者の需要が急増しています。
   
   The convenience of online shopping has gained widespread popularity among consumers. Consequently, there has been a substantial increase in demand for delivery services.
   
   

3. オンラインショッピングの普及に伴い、個人情報の漏洩や詐欺のリスクも増加しています。
   結果として、多くの企業がセキュリティ対策を強化しています。　
   
   With the increasing popularity of online shopping, the risks of personal data leakage and scams have also risen. As a consequence, many companies are enhancing their security measures to protect consumers' information and maintain trust.

ここから紹介する3つの単語、therefore, thus, henceは、すべて原因と結果を示すために使われるため、基本的にはどの文でも置き換えて使うことができます。

全てライティングで使われる表現ですが、

therefore < thus < hence

の順でフォーマルさが変わります。

③therefore

シチュエーション
・原因と結果を示すために使われる
・論理的な結果や結論を導くときに使用。
・結果や結論を強調するために用いる。

例文
Many young people lack access to quality education in underprivileged areas; therefore, they struggle to find well-paying jobs and break the cycle of poverty.
多くの若者は、恵まれない地域で質の高い教育を受けることができない。そのため、賃金の高い仕事を見つけ、貧困の連鎖を断ち切るのに苦労している。

The criminal justice system disproportionately targets minority communities; therefore, there is a growing demand for reform and equality in law enforcement practices.
刑事司法制度は、マイノリティのコミュニティを不当に標的としている。そのため、法執行慣行の改革と平等を求める声が高まっている。

Cybersecurity threats have become more sophisticated and frequent; therefore, businesses and governments must invest heavily in security measures to protect sensitive information.
サイバーセキュリティの脅威はより巧妙になり、頻発している。したがって、企業や政府は機密情報を保護するためのセキュリティ対策に多額の投資をしなければならない。

④thus

シチュエーション
・原因と結果を示すために使われる
・結果を明確にするために使用する。
・具体的な結果や効果を述べるときに用いる。

例文
The rise in mental health issues among teenagers is largely due to social media pressures; thus, schools and parents are urged to provide better support and guidance for online behaviour.
10 代の若者の間で精神衛生上の問題が増加しているのは、ソーシャル・メディアによる圧力が主な原因である。

Many public schools are underfunded, thus students in these schools often receive a lower quality education compared to those in well-funded districts.
多くの公立学校は資金不足であるため、これらの学校の生徒は、資金が潤沢な地区の生徒に比べて質の低い教育を受けることが多い。

The widespread availability of processed foods has contributed to a rise in obesity rates; thus, public health campaigns are focusing on promoting healthier eating habits.
加工食品が広く出回っていることが肥満率の上昇につながっているため、公衆衛生キャンペーンでは、より健康的な食習慣の促進に重点を置いている。

⑤hence

シチュエーション
・原因と結果を示すために使われる
・特に、その結果が予測可能なものである場合に使用する。

例文
Poor waste management practices have led to severe pollution in many cities, hence the push for stricter environmental regulations.
多くの都市では、劣悪な廃棄物管理慣行が深刻な環境汚染につながっているため、環境規制の強化が求められている。

Inadequate funding for public education has resulted in declining school performance, hence the demand for increased investment in the education sector.
公教育への資金が不十分なため学校の成績が低下しており、教育分野への投資拡大が求められている。

Many rural areas lack access to clean drinking water, hence the implementation of water purification projects and infrastructure improvements.
多くの農村部では清潔な飲料水へのアクセスが不足しているため、浄水プロジェクトやインフラ整備の実施が求められている。
