60年代シカゴのバイク族の誕生と栄光、そして悲劇
米カウンターカルチャーの貴重な1ページに目を向ける映画

　米国南部の深部に目を向ける名作を生み出だしてきたジェフ・ニコルス監督の新作は、60年代後半バイク族の隆盛とそれにまつわるメンバーの軌跡を追う。フォトジャーナリスト、ダニー・リオンズの同タイトル写真集（1968年）に収められた写真とインタビューをもとに監督自身が脚本化した力作。原作はリオンズがシカゴ郊外の町で結成された世界最古のバイク・クラブである（設立1935年）アウトロウ・モーターサイクル・クラブに長期同行取材して著した伝説の写真集。本作はこの写真集に登場する人たちをインタビューした素材と写真をもとに作り上げている。ドキュメンタリーではなく、あえてドラマ化、かなり時間を要した複雑な作業だったに違いない。

　バイク族の長を務めるのはジョニー（トム・ハーディー）、彼が後任にしたいと願う若いバイカーのベニー（オースティン・バトラー）とガールフレンドのキャシー（ジョディー・カマー）の出会いと恋愛を軸に、キャシーが語り手となりバイク族の誕生から隆盛、そして悲劇的な週末を迎えた初期の時代を回顧するという形で映画は展開する。ヘルス・エンジェルスなど、のちにバイク族は犯罪の世界とかかわるようになり世界中に悪名をはせることになるが、本作はバイクを愛する仲間がバイク愛で結ばれ絆を築く初期の過程、そして当時のアメリカ社会、底辺に位置する彼らの人生や視点に目を向けているあたりが非常に興味深い。声をもたない労働者階級の青年の生の声を聞けるまれな体験であり、バイオレンスやDV、ベトナム戦争などをちりばめ綴る物語は涙さえさそう。50年後の今、観る者は当時の社会について考えさえられる。原作者のダニー・リオンズは人類学者であり、彼の焦点は目を引く大型バイクのカッコよさでもスピードでもないっく、ハンドルを握る人類の様、なのだ。

　キャストは豪華で魅力的。人間性あふれるキャラクター描写が圧巻のトム・ハーディー、口数少ない孤独で神秘的なベニーを体当たりで演じるフォト・ジェニックなオースティン・バトラー、シカゴ訛りを巧みにこなし運命の女性キャシーになりきる名優ジョディー・カマーの共演が見どころ。加えてマイケル・シャノン、ノーマン・リーダーズなどが長髪に革ジャン、茶色の歯で60年代バイク族へと変身しているあたりは一見の価値あり。50年前のイリノイ州へと観る者をトリップさせる。

Director Jeff Nichols, who has produced masterpieces that look into the depths of the American South, has released a new film that follows the rise of the biker gang in the late 1960s and the path of its members. The director himself wrote the screenplay for this powerful work based on the photographs and interviews in the photobook of the same name (1968) by photojournalist Danny Lyons. The original work is a legendary photobook that Lyons wrote after a long period of accompanying the Outlaw Motorcycle Club, the world's oldest motorcycle club (established in 1935), which was formed in a town on the outskirts of Chicago. This film is based on the interviews and photographs of the people featured in the photobook. It is not a documentary, but a dramatization, which must have been a complex task that took a considerable amount of time.

　The leader of the biker gang, Johnny (Tom Hardy) is hoping to hand over his leadership when time comes to Benny (Austin Butler), a young biker. His girlfriend, Cathy (Jodie Comer) is  the narrator of this movie, looking back on the early days of the biker gang, from its birth to its rise and its tragic end. Later, biker gangs became infamous around the world, with acts such as the Hell's Angels becoming involved in the world of crime, but this film is very interesting in that it focuses on the early process of the motorcycle enthusiasts forming bonds through their love for motorcycles, as well as the lives and perspectives of those who were at the bottom of American society at the time. It is a rare experience to hear the real voices of working-class youth who have no voice, and the story, which is sprinkled with violence, domestic violence, and the Vietnam War, may even bring tears to your eyes. Now, 50 years later, the viewer can even think about the society of that time. Danny Lyons, the author of the book, is an anthropologist, and his focus is not on the coolness or speed of the big bikes that catch the eye, but on the humanity behind the wheel.

The cast is lavish and fascinating. Highlights include Tom Hardy, whose portrayal of a character full of humanity is stunning, the photogenic Austin Butler, who plays the taciturn and mysterious Benny, and the great Jodie Comer, who skillfully uses a Chicago accent to become the woman of his destiny, Cathy. In addition, it is worth seeing Michael Shannon and Norman Reedus, who transform into 1960s bikers with long hair, leather jackets and brown teeth.
