タイ語と上下関係、敬意の払い方(日英note)

Today I will share what I am interested in while studying Thai and English.
それは「上下関係や敬意」をどうやって表現するの？ということです。

I wonder if  how to express politeness and respect.

日本語では尊敬語、謙譲語を使ったり、「〜さん」「〜様」「役職名」をつけます。英語ではどんな表現があるのか、あまり想像できませんでした。

In Japanese, we use polite expressions like honorifics and humble expressions. In addition to that, we put "san","sama"and the position after the elder person's name.　I couldn't imagine how to express  politeness and respect in English.

ところで、タイ語は「上下関係」をしっかり表す言語だと感じています。

By the way, Thai language has a lot of expressions to pay respect to elder person.
タイに住んでいる時に感じたんですが、日本よりも上下関係を意識している国です。
When I lived in Thailand, they cared about hierarchy  much more than that of Japanese.
初め理解し難いことが多々ありました。At first, I faced something understandable in Thailand.

僕は小学校から中学校まで野球をしていました。
上下関係、敬意を払うことについて厳しく教え込まれていたと思います。

I was trained by a coach to pay respect to elder people when I played baseball.  
先輩、コーチ、目上の人に対しては
丁寧な言葉遣いをする。

目上の人の話を聞いている間は帽子をとる。
前を通る時は、屈む。など細かいルールがありました。
There a lot of strict rule that wearing cap was prohibited while I was getting advice and lowering my head when I cut across in front of elder people.

しかし、
それがルールだから、そのルールにしたがってきただけで、
本当に心から「敬意を払う」という意識はなかったように思います。However, it was just a rule to obey. I didn't care about paying respect for real.

タイに住んで、本当に心から「敬意を払う」ことを目の当たりにしてきました。

While I was in Thailand, it was matter of course to pay respect from the bottom our heart.
まず年上の人かどうか確認します。直接年齢を聞くときもあれば、話から予想することもあります。
At first, we asked the age whether the listener was senior or not. We sometimes asked the age directly but we often guess the age.

その人が年上だとわかるとพี่（ピー　お兄さん、お姉さん）〇〇、をつけて呼びます。

Once we noticed the listener was senior, we put "pii ( senior)" after their name.

日本語だと「〜さん」、全くの他人ですが、もう少し家族の「お兄さん」「お姉さん」に近い意味を持っています。

In Japanese we put "san" after senior's name but sounds like not close relationship but"pii" sounds like a much more close relationship.

学校の先生に対しては
อาจารย์（アジャーン　先生）〇〇
をつけます。

We put "ajarn" in front of  teacher's name.

私はアジャーンゆーいちと呼ばれていましたw

That's why I was called ajarn Yuichi.
タイで面白かったのは、敬称をつけて呼ぶ相手を本当に行動から尊敬していることです。

What I was interested in in Thailand is people really respect from the bottom their heart.

例えば、挨拶する時は
必ず目下から目上にすることです。

For example, junior people say hello to senior people first.
合掌（ワイ）をします。The palms together.
先生に対しては学生が職員室に入る時は
職員は土足で入室しているところでも、
学生は靴を脱いで入室します。

Students take off their shoes when they enter teacher's office even though the teacher wears shoes.

これには本当に理解し難かったですが、
先生たちに対する敬意の表し方の一つだと考えられているそうです。

It was hard to understand this culture but this is the one way to respect teachers.

また目上の人も
目下の人をน้อง（ノーン）○○とまるで「弟」や「妹」など家族のように
可愛がります。On the other hand, the elder people give junior love like a family member by putting "nong(junior)".

 職場での人間関係も日本よりも近いように思います。

The relationship between junior and senior is closer than that of Japan.
日本よりも上下関係は明確にしているものの
近しい関係性を気づきやすいという
理想的な上下関係だなぁと思いました。

Actually Thai people care about hierarchy but I think it's an ideal relationship.

帰国した今でも目上のタイ人には敬称をつける癖が残っています。
敬意を払うことはどういうことかいつも考えさせられるタイでの経験でした。

Now I came back to Japan but I got into the habit of using expressions for older people. It was a good experience which made me think about what respect is.
