Are we approaching the rainy season? Although I have already changed my wardrobe for the season, I will be careful not to endure the chilly days too much, especially on rainy or cloudy days.

もうそろそろ梅雨入りでしょうか。この頃は衣替えを済ませたものの、雨や曇りの日はまだ肌寒い日もあるのであまり我慢しないように気をつけます。

What is Bōshu?

Bōshu, which occurs from June 5th to June 20th in 2024, marks the period when seeds of grains like rice and wheat are traditionally sown. The term "Bōshu" derives from "nogi," referring to the awn, the bristle-like structure at the tip of the ears of grains such as rice and wheat. Although modern agricultural practices often see these seeds planted earlier in the year, Bōshu remains symbolically significant in the agricultural calendar.

芒種とは？

2024年の芒種は6月5日から6月20日までの期間を指し、稲や麦などの穀物の種を蒔く時期を表しています。「芒種」という言葉は、稲や麦などの穂先にあるトゲのような部分を指す「のぎ」に由来します。現代の農業では実際の種まきはこれより早い時期に行われることが多いですが、芒種は農業暦の中で象徴的な意味を持っています。

The Significance of Sowing During Bōshu

Bōshu is not just about the act of planting seeds; it also symbolizes growth and new beginnings. Seeds sown during this period are expected to grow vigorously, reflecting the season's promise of abundance. This time is also considered auspicious for starting new ventures or activities. In Japan, there is a traditional practice called "keiko hajime," where children begin their lessons on June 6th of their sixth year, aligning with the spirit of Bōshu.

芒種は単に種を蒔く行為だけでなく、成長と新たな始まりを象徴しています。この期間に蒔かれた種は、力強く成長することが期待され、豊かさの約束を反映しています。また、この時期は新しい事業や活動を始めるのに縁起が良いとされています。日本では、「稽古始め」と呼ばれる伝統があり、子供たちが数え年で6歳の6月6日に稽古を始める風習が芒種の精神と一致しています。
