The often confused "uguisu color"

In Japan, the term "uguisu color" often conjures up the image of the Japanese white-eye, rather than the actual Uguisu bird. This confusion stems from the mix-up between the Uguisu and the Mejiro. Although both birds differ in appearance and sound, they belong to the same order, Passeriformes, but are classified into different families. With the arrival of spring, the Uguisu is known for its distinctive "ho-ho-ke-kyo" call, while the Mejiro, with its bright yellow-green feathers and behavior of seeking nectar, becomes more visible. The Uguisu, having a more subdued coloration and residing in remote areas, is less frequently seen compared to the lively and conspicuous Mejiro, which was once popular as a pet. The difference in vocalization and appearance between the two birds is the root of this confusion.

混同されがちな「鶯色」

日本で「鶯色」というと、多くの人が実際のウグイスではなく、メジロの色を思い浮かべることが多いです。これは、ウグイスとメジロの混同によるもの。両者は見た目と声が異なるにも関わらず、同じスズメ目ウグイス上科に属していますが、異なる科に分類されます。春になると、ウグイスはその特徴的な「ホーホケキョ」という鳴き声で知られ、一方のメジロは鮮やかな黄緑色の羽と蜜を求める行動で目にすることが多くなります。ウグイスが地味な色合いで人里離れた場所に生息し、見かけにくいのに対し、メジロはその活発な姿でよく目立ち、昔はペットとしても人気がありました。この鳴き声と外見の違いが混同の原因となっています。
