とうとう梅雨入りしましたね！

楽しめたし、まだ雨のせいで外に出れない状態は経験してません。

★ 1月の台湾総統選で、中国の圧力のなか、反中国(China-skeptic)の姿勢を貫く民進党 Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)は、現選挙制度下で前例のない(unprecedented)３期目の政権を担うことになりました★

When Lai, who also goes by the anglicized name William, finally took office, on May 20, his inauguration speech so riled Beijing that it dispatched fighter jets and warships in "punishment" exercises designed to demonstrate its ability to "seize power."

2024年5月20日、台湾総統の就任演説時の発言が中国政府の怒りを買い(rile)、中国は「いつでも権力を掌握できるんだぞ(seize power)！」と力を誇示するため、Lai総統の発言*＆台湾の分離派の流れに反応し、"懲罰的(punishment)"な軍事演習として、爆撃機や軍艦を台湾周辺に配備しています。(-＿-)ｳｰﾑ

• Lai総統の就任演説での発言：
  "The governments of Beijing and Taipei are not subordinate to each other."
  「中国政府と台湾政府は、相互に従属関係にはない」 (+_+)

Taiwan became politically self-ruling in 1949 at the end of China's civil war.
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has never controlled the island of 23 million, which still officially uses the archaic title Republic of China (ROC).

1949年、国共内戦(China's civil war)の終結時、台湾＝中華民国(Republic of China)は、自治政府となりました。以来、中国共産党(CCP）の統治下にはないものの、

Chinese President Xi Jinping considers it a renegade province whose "reunification" is a "historical inevitability" and has repeatedly threatened force to achieve it.

中国の習近平(Xi Jinping)国家主席は、台湾のことを「歴史的に再統一されるべき」である「反乱地域(renegade province)」であるとして、いずれは中国統一（つまり、併合annexation）を目指し、武力による威嚇行為を繰り返しているという現状。 (-_-;)

■ Taiwan is officially recognized by just 12 governments
(国連では中国代表権を失っているため、現時点で台湾を正式な国家政府と承認するのは12か国のみ）

Official recognition, after all, is not all the world sees. Lai's inauguration
was attended by 51 international delegations, including the U.S., U.K., Australia, Japan, and Canada.

ただし、西側諸国の非承認国の多くは台湾との外交的・政治的つながりを、実質一つの国に対する関係だと考えているといえるでしょう。
Lai総統の就任式にも、米、英、オーストラリア、日本、カナダを含む51の国や地域の代表団が出席しました。(#^.^#)

The stronger the ties between Taipei and Washington, the more pressure Beijing puts on the island, and the greater the danger of finally exploding a Cold War conflict that has smoldered for 75 years.

特に台湾政府と米国政府の関係が強まれば強まるほど、中国政府の台湾に対する圧力も強くなり....。(>_<)

■ 現在、台湾＝半導体製造トップ（世界経済の行方を左右する立場とも言えるでしょう。）

His most transformative achievement as mayor of Tainan was persuading TSMC to establish a $40 billion foundry in Tainan, where today the semi-conductor colossus produces its most advanced 3nm chips for firms such as Apple and Qualcomm.

Lai氏が台南市の市長だった2017年までの7年間の中で、台南市にファウンドリ（半導体チップ製造工場）設立をTSMC(Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company）社にさせたことが功績の一つだったと言われています。 (^^)d

The project helped entrench Taiwan both in global supply chains and in today's simmering tech competition between the U.S. and China.

このプロジェクトがきっかけとなり、今や台湾はグローバルサプライチェーンの中に、同時に、テック分野における米中対立の構図の中に、しっかりと組み込まれることになりました。 (･o･;)

Taiwan produces 90% of the world's most advanced semiconductors, and the global cost of a war over the island could reach $10 trillion, estimates Bloomberg Economics.

台湾をめぐる米中対立（＝戦争の危険性）のコストは、世界にとっても
莫大なものになるであろうことは容易に想像できますね。 (-_-;)

■ Lai総統のとらえ方 ：冷静(calm)

Lai projects calm. While admitting "geopolitical changes will continue to impact the dispersion of semiconductor companies," he "does not believe that this will increase the risk of conflict."

Lai, a 64-year-old bubble-tea fanatic, and loathed by Beijing as a "dangerous separatist."

タピオカティー(bubble-tea)好きだという64歳のLai総統は、中国政府からは「危険な分離派」だ（dangerous separatist)として忌み嫌われて(loathed)います。

Lai総統の方はというと....（＾～＾）

"I invite President Xi to jointly shoulder with us the responsibility of
maintaining peace and stability, building regional prosperity, and advancing world peace."

中国との関係については「私は親中であって反中ではない。親中愛台だ」と主張している、とウィキペディアにも書いてありました。
