Not long ago, he was a libertarian economist and TV pundit known as El Loco , the madman - for his profane outbursts.

元リバタリアン（自由至上主義）経済学者であり、よく怒鳴り散らす(profane outbursts) El Loco (変人＝madman)として知られていたTVコメンテーターでした(+_+)

The oddities of his campaign often overshadowed the stark austerity program he promoted to pull the country out of its economic crisis.

彼の選挙活動の奇抜・奇妙さ(oddities）のために、国の経済危機を脱するため彼の訴える「厳しい緊縮政策(stark austerity program)」の影を薄くさせていた(overshadowed)。

Milei, who has bragged about being a tantric sex guru, brandished a chainsaw
at rallies to symbolize his plans to slash government spending, dressed up as a superhero who sang about fiscal policy, and told voters that his five cloned English mastiffs, which he reportedly consults in telepathic conversations, are his "best strategists."

自分は「タントラ教セックスグルだ」と豪語したミレイ大統領は、選挙活動中の集会でチェーンソーを振り回し政府支出を大幅削減する計画であることをアピールし、スーパーヒーローのコスチュームを身に着け財政政策(fiscal policy)の歌を歌い、彼が飼っている5匹のクローン犬イングリッシュ・マスティフ（大型の警備用犬）が彼のbest strategists(ストラテジスト)。
この犬たちとテレパシーを使って会話・相談している、と有権者に語り。。。(^_^;)

He pledged to eliminate the nation's central bank, derided climate change
as a socialist conspiracy, and assailed Pope Francis, the first Argentine Pontiff,
as a "leftist son of a bitch." Last November, he won in a landslide.

アルゼンチンの中央銀行を廃止する！と公約し、気候変動問題は、社会主義者の陰謀論だとあざ笑い(derided)、アルゼンチン出身のローマ教皇フランシスコのことを「左翼のson of a bitch」だと激しく非難(assailed)。　
昨年11月の大統領選で圧勝(landslide)。(?＿?)

■ 各国の右派大衆主義（right-wing populist ）のリーダーの中でも、他に類を見ない存在。

Like his counterparts from Italy to Hungary, Brazil to Peru, the U.S. to India, Milei vowed to dismantle a corruption-riddled state ruled by shadowy elites.

闇に包まれたエリートたちに統治される腐敗のはびこった国家を解体する！と誓うのは同じだけど

But none of his counterparts is quite like Milei, with his volcanic temper, mad scientist's bearing - he claims not to comb his wild mop of hair because the "invisible hand of the market" does it for him - and messianic streak.

他国のpopulistリーダーとはかなり違う。強烈で激しい気性(volcanic temper)、マッドサイエンティストのような振る舞い(bearing)。自分のぼさぼさ頭はくしでとかしたりしない、という大統領。
なぜなら「市場の見えざる手(invisible hand of the market)」が、彼のためにそれをやってくれるからだとか。(-＿-)ｳｰﾑ

And none of them leads a nation like Argentina, a resource-rich regional power plagued by decades of political mismanagement and economic instability, which has now become a test case for the governing theories of a radical ideologue.

政治的な不始末と不安的な経済のせいで何十年も苦しむ資源豊かな国、アルゼンチン。急進的なイデオロギーによる統治方法がうまくいくかどうかのテストケースとなった。

■ 経済の「ショック療法」

Since taking office, Milei, 53, has frozen public-works projects, devalued the peso by more than 50%, and announced plans to lay off more than 70,000 government workers. So far, he sees signs that his economic "shock therapy" is working.

就任以来、公共事業は凍結、ペソの通貨価値を50％以上切り下げ、70,000人以上の国家公務員解雇（アルゼンチンには、登庁しないで給料だけもらう寄生虫公務員が大量にいる、という話）

Milei thinks he is pioneering an approach that will become a global blueprint.
"Argentina will become a model for how to transform a country into a prosperous nation," he tells me. "I have no doubt."

Milei1's moves - cutting federal aid, transport and energy subsidies, and getting rid of price controls- have caused living costs to spike. More than 55% of Argentines are mired in poverty, up from 45% in December.
Milei may be running out of time before his popular support crumbles.

ただし、ミレイの大胆な緊縮政策により、貧困率は55％以上に。経済政策が成功する前に支持率が下がって失敗するのではないかという懸念も既に出てきている様子(>_<)

■ El Jefe（ボス）と呼ばれる 妹 カリーナ （Karina Milei）：大統領直属で閣僚級の首席補佐官

Karina, 52, is a former tarot reader who until a few years ago was selling cakes on Instagram. Now she controls which journalists her brother speaks with, which photos of him are released, and, reportedly, what Cabinet ministers are hired and fired.

大統領（兄）がどのジャーナリストのインタビューを受けるか、兄のどの写真をリリースするかまた、どの閣僚を雇い、クビにするかも？ 彼女がコントロールしているとも言われています。
元タロットカードの占い師で、インスタで焼き菓子を売っていた、ということですが、（こういう情報知ると、つい「大丈夫なんだろうか」なんて思ってしまうのは、失礼なのかな。）

★就任から、半年が過ぎたミレイ大統領ですが、今後、国際社会ではどんな立ち位置となるのか....
（「アルゼンチンのトランプ」なんていう異名も持ってますからねぇ）そこにも注目です。
