今日もaudible: ところで audible uk って何？
Department Q（特捜部Q）シリーズと1作目については今日もaudible 第9回: Department Q （特捜部Q）Book 1 をご参照ください。
本日は今日もaudible 第10回の続きです。Department Q シリーズの2作目で気になった表現です。
go easy on
Chapter 14からの表現です。
"Make us a cup of tea, Assad," Carl said down in the basement, pushing the plastic grocery bags containing Johan Jacobsen's papers into the corner. "Go easy on the sugar, OK?"
Book 1 からのことなのですが、Assad はたっぷり砂糖の入ったお茶を出すので、Carl は困っています。
そこで go easy on the sugar と Carl は頼んだところ、次のページではこんなミントティーが出てきます。the conversation は Carl と上司の間のものです。
"Nice mint tea with a little sugar," Assad said after the conversation ended, handing him a cup. It looked as though the teaspoon could stand upright in the sea of syrup.
Assad としては 'a little' のつもりのようです。
チュニジアを旅行したときに確かにミントティーに砂糖が入っているのを何度か飲みましたが、ここまでたっぷりではありませんでした．．．
go easy (on) の定義ですが、OED では下記のとおりです。
a. To use (something) sparingly or in moderation; to act cautiously or with restraint; to proceed with caution.
Longman はもっとすっきり書いています。
go easy on/with something
to not use too much of something
ジーニアス大英和では「［しばしば命令文で］」として1つ目の定義に「〈物・事〉を加減して使え［行え］；〈調味料・飲み物など〉をほどほどにしなさい」とあります。例文がわかりやすいです。
Go easy on the onions.
玉ネギはちょっとでいいです．
それなのに、 go easy on the sugar と頼んだ Carl に Assad が出したのは、ティースプーンが立つのではというくらいに、砂糖が入ってシロップ状になっている ミントティーだったのです。
余談ですが、いわゆる発達障害と言われるものを持つ方々にとって苦手な指示が、今回のようなあいまいなものだとはよく聞きます。個人差はもちろんあると思います。
はっきりと「ティースプーン1杯」とか「2グラム」のように伝えると誤解がなくてわかりやすいというのは、障害のあるなしに関係ありません。
be on to
Chapter 14からの表現です。
今回の事件はそもそもあまりの収穫のなさに自分でも嫌になっていたというのに、いま調査している件から手を引けと上司から言われます。
人からやめろと言われると、逆にやってやろうという気になる、主人公の性格を描写しているところです。
When Carl was a boy, his father had been on to him. He gave Carl explicit orders not to plow the meadow, so Carl plowed it. He admonished Carl not to join the military, and Carl enlisted. His crafty father had even tried to steer him toward the lasses. This farmer's daughter and that farmer's daughter weren't good enough, he said, so Carl went after them. That was Carl's way, and always had been. No one was going to make his decisions for him, which actually made him easy to manipulate. He knew this, of course. The question was whether or not the police chief also knew it. It was hard to imagine.
be on to ですが、OED web版では下記のような定義です。
to be on at (also to be on to): to nag or berate (a person).
be も on も to も使われる頻度が高い語ですが、このように使うのは初めて見ました。
four months along 妊娠4ヵ月
Chapter 17からの表現です。
"I see." Again he paged through the file. "So she was four months along when she was admitted. After a few days the doctors believed her risk of miscarriage had passed, but on the ninth day she miscarried anyway. In the follow-up examination they found new bruises from a blow to her abdomen. Kimmie explained the by saying she'd fallen out of bed." Carl fumbled after a cigarette. "That's really hard to believe."
「妊娠」と言えば 'pregnant' と覚えましたが、along を使ってこんな風に言えるのですね。
OEDでは下記のように定義されています。形容詞としての定義の7番目のかたまりの中の3番目です。
c. Originally U.S. At a particular point in the course of a pregnancy (often a specified number of months).
ジーニアス大英和では along の副詞の3番目の定義のなかに例文がありました。
3a［通例 far, well などを前に置いて］〈仕事・時間などが〉かなり進んで［進行して，はかどって］
She is six months along.
彼女は妊娠6か月だ．
D and C
こちらも Chapter 17 からです。
聴いていた時「DNCって何？」と思っていたら、本で確認すると D and C でした。やっぱり本を開いてみるものですね。
It doesn't say whether doctors performed a D and C on her or anything like that.
dilation and curettage とジーニアス英和辞典第5版にはあります。さらにdilation and curettage を同辞典で引くと難しい言葉の後に「妊娠中絶手術」とありました。
まだいくつかメモしておいた表現があるのですが、ここまでにしておきます。
