Tyranny of meritocracy started to point out how today's college selection process only benefits students from affluent family.

According to the book, acceptance rate is 5 times higher for alumni students than normal students. Athlete recruitment is also bad because sports used for the selection includes ones rich people only can play, like horse riding.

As a result, college didn't contribute to improve the social mobility. Especially, elite private university is bad. There are some exceptions. Cal State University at Los Angeles and the State University of New York at Stony Brook enabled nearly 10 % of the students to rise from economic bottom to top.

Sandel points out two problems in today's college system. First, people in U.S. basically don't have college degree and constantly admonishing them to get one if they would like to improve their condition is just disrespectful and not inspiring. Second, college admission became "sorting machine" is also problematic because it insults who get out of the process and this doesn't match the purpose of education institute.
