Hey it’s Kenny. I want to talk a little bit about what it is that we are doing when we are building a model and why we are doing it. Because it is so easy to get really focused on the technical details in the model and lose sight of the big picture.

こんにちは、ケニーです。今回は、モデルを作るときに何をしているのか、なぜそうしているのかについて少しお話したいと思います。なぜなら、モデルの技術的な細部にばかり気を取られて、全体像を見失ってしまいがちだからです。

Tom Grossman came up with the idea of business analysis lifecycle. And I find that enormously useful in putting into context what is that we are doing and why we are doing it. What’s the endpoint. In this framework we split the world into two parts. The real world and the model world. 

トム・グロスマンは、ビジネス・アナリシス・ライフサイクルというアイデアを思いつきました。この考え方は、私たちが何をしているのか、なぜそれを行っているのかという文脈を整理する上で、非常に有用だと思います。終点はどこか。このフレームワークでは、世界を2つのパートに分割しています。現実の世界とモデルの世界です。

Of course modelers spend a lot of time in the model world. It’s super important for us to see the big picture of what we are doing. It starts in the real world with a real business question. How much can we borrow? How much we should pay for this business? How much should we bit? Those are the questions we are seeking to answer. 

もちろんモデラーはモデルの世界で多くの時間を過ごします。自分たちがやっていることの全体像を見ることは、超重要なことです。現実の世界では、実際のビジネス上の疑問から始まります。いくら借りられるのか？このビジネスにはいくら払えばいいのか？いくら噛めばいいのか？といった疑問です。

And this is how we do it. We go into the model world. Because we know that we need to create some kind of a model to test our hypothesis and generate some insights. I think this is an important distinction. It starts with a conceptual model. We need to understand this business, this project, the financing, the operational drivers, we need to understand that before we can go on the spreadsheet model. 

そして、これが私たちのやり方です。私たちはモデルの世界に入り込みます なぜなら、仮説を検証し、何らかの洞察を得るために、何らかのモデルを作る必要があることが分かっているからです。これは重要な違いだと思います。コンセプトモデルから始まります。このビジネス、プロジェクト、資金調達、オペレーショナル・ドライバーを理解する必要があり、それを理解した上で、スプレッドシートモデルを作成します。

Those are two different skillsets. It is super important to know the difference between them. Yes it is important to get the technical details of the model right. But if you don’t have the conceptual understanding, you are lost. If you are doing good job here, then have a model you can use to perform analysis. And with that analysis, we can create management insights. 

この2つは異なるスキルセットです。その違いを知ることが超重要です。確かに、モデルの技術的な詳細を正しく理解することは重要です。しかし、コンセプトを理解していなければ、何もできません。もし、あなたがここで良い仕事をしているなら、分析を行うために使用できるモデルを持っているはずです。そして、その分析によって、経営の洞察を生み出すことができるのです。

Real world insights that we can then communicate back to the people that have the original question. This is a whole lifecycle. And it is really important to know where we are on that. And it is also important to see the multiple different skillsets involved. I always think this is why it’s really hard to find excellent financial modelers. Because we need to have the conceptual understanding and understand business. 

そして、その洞察を元の質問をした人たちに伝えることができます。これはライフサイクル全体です。その中で、自分たちがどの位置にいるのかを知ることは、本当に重要です。また、複数の異なるスキルセットが関与していることを確認することも重要です。私は常々、優秀なファイナンシャル・モデラーを見つけるのが難しいのは、このためだと考えています。なぜなら、コンセプトを理解し、ビジネスを理解する必要があるからです。

We need to be able to build technically excellent model then have the analytical skill, and then the communication skill to take those insights and present them effectively. And that’s all about data presentation, data visualization, and whole other skillsets. I think it is important to see that this is the entire big picture of what we’re doing when are forming business analysis. Love to hear what you think.
