Hey it’s Kenny. I want to talk to you today about what we can learn, us financial modelers from Irish monks in the 5th Century. That was unexpected right? So here is what happened.

When Latin scripts arrived from Rome in Ireland in the 5th Century, the monks were incredibly frustrated because these scripts were just one long continuous bit of text. There was absolutely no spacing in between any of the words. That was just the way it was done.

One clever monk in the 5th Century in Ireland decided it would make life a lot easier if we just put a little space in between the words and we make the sentences much more readable.

That kind of caught on. And obviously that's what we all do today. I am going to recommend. It's a super minor thing when it comes to a model, but it's actually super useful, putting spaces in between the elements of your formulas in Excel really helps readability.

Compare this and this.

It's a minor difference but it's an improvement in readability. An Excel just ignores spaces.

些細な違いですが、読みやすさが向上しました。エクセルはスペースを無視するんです。

A couple places you can’t put spaces. You can’t put spaces before the equal sign in Excel. Excel will then read the whole formula as text.

スペースを入れられない場所はいくつかあります。エクセルでは等号の前にスペースを入れることはできません。そうすると、Excelは数式全体をテキストとして読み込んでしまいます。

You cannot put them between a function and an opening bracket. Excel doesn't like that. It considers functions and opening brackets in one unit.

それから、関数と開括弧「（」の間にスペースを挟むことはできません。エクセルはそれを嫌います。関数と開括弧を一つの単位として考えています。

These are two places that you cannot put spaces.
スペースを入れられない場所は以上の2箇所です。
