Judging Policy

 -Elucidate everything, all for the sake of “convincing” -

My belief in judging speeches is that I should be able to give a complete explanation of why I have given a score for all the criteria. In other words, “To analyse and evaluate speeches scientifically” and "To make everything clear objectively”.

In order to evaluate speeches scientifically, I use the following four procedures.

1. Faithfully follow the judging criteria set by the organiser of the contest
2. According to the criteria, use the consistent scoring formula for each judging 
3. Record the entire judging process and scoring basis in the speaker's manuscript
4. Disclose the scoring formula used for judging to all the speakers after the contest

In accordance with this belief, I will make every process visible and objective, so that you can understand which words, phrases and clauses in the manuscript have affected which part of the judging criteria and have been added or deducted points.

The purpose is to eliminate arbitrariness and to ensure objectivity in the results of the evaluation. Traditionally, public speaking has been judged in a way that relies on the subjectivity of the judges. However, this reliance on subjectivity does not exclude the possibility that, depending on the judges' impressions of the speech, points may be given or deducted for evaluation items that are not directly relevant. It is also possible that the same speech by the same speaker may be scored differently depending on the mental and physical state of the judge.

I thought that such a scoring approach could lead to unfairness in the judging results, which ultimately could lead to the undermining of the authority of the contest. Therefore, I use my own method, which I have developed over many years of my own research, to analyse and evaluate speeches scientifically. By using this method, I will work to ensure that the results of my evaluation are convincing for all the speakers and contribute to their motivation and further learning for public speaking and the development of the contest.
