20枚のLPレコードしか残していないが、ソウルやファンクの影響も受けた単なるジャズの進化系ではない70年代ブラック・コミュニティの空気感を強烈に意識したレーベル。
若きブラック・ミュージシャンの育成を目的として、ジーン・ラッセル（Gene Russell）とOvation Recordsの創設者でもあるディック・ショリー（Dick Shory）が1969年にオークランドに創設。
