Merna graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Aleppo in Syria and obtained her medical license there.
She was planning to study in Germany and was learning German, but she hadn't studied Japanese because she didn't intend to come to Japan.
However, since her husband was going to study in Japan, she has been living in Japan since October 2015.

Merna started learning Japanese from scratch and passed the JLPT N1 level after four years.
During those four years, she also experienced pregnancy, childbirth, and raising a child. In February 2022, she passed the Japanese national medical examination, becoming the first Syrian to obtain a Japanese medical license.
During my university days, I had many friends in medical school, and I know how much effort they put into memorizing a vast number of technical terms.
It's incredible to think that a foreigner who started learning Japanese just four years ago could memorize all that and pass the exam; she must have put in an unbelievable amount of effort.

When she talked about wanting to obtain a Japanese medical license after coming to Japan, all the medical professionals who came to Japan from abroad told her it was absolutely impossible.
However, she thought, "You never know until you try," and made the effort.

I have acquaintances who are students from Syria and other Middle Eastern countries who have come to Japan.
Almost all of them come to Japan without having had the opportunity to learn Japanese in their home countries.
Even if they want to find a job in Japan after studying abroad, it's not easy to get employed.

Merna's efforts and results will surely inspire those people.
It would be wonderful if they could learn Japanese at their host universities or through programs like PONTIS.

メルナさんはシリアのアレッポ大学の医学部を卒業してシリアで医師免許を取りました。
ドイツに留学する予定でドイツ語を勉強していましたが、日本に来るつもりはなかったので日本語の勉強はしていませんでした。
ところが、メルナさんの夫が日本に留学することになったため、2015年10月から日本に住んでいます。

メルナさんは日本語をゼロから学び始めて4年でJLPTのN1に合格しました。
その4年間の間に、彼女は妊娠・出産・子育てもしています。
そして、2022年の2月に日本で医師国家試験に合格しました。
シリア人で最初の日本の医師免許を取りました。

私は大学時代に医学部の友人が多かったので、彼らがものすごくたくさんの専門用語を覚える努力をしていたのを知っています。
それを日本語を学び始めて4年の外国人が覚えて合格するというのは信じられないくらいの努力をしたに違いありません。

日本に来てから日本の医師免許を取りたいと外国から日本に来ている医療関係者に話すと、全員が絶対無理だと答えたそうです。
でも、彼女は「やってみないとわからないでしょう」と思って努力したそうです。

私の知り合いにもシリア人や中東の国から日本に来ている留学生がいます。
ほぼ全員が母国で日本語を学ぶ機会がなく、日本にやってきています。
留学後日本で就職したくてもなかなか就職できません。
メルナさんの努力とその結果はきっとそうした人たちを励ますに違いありません。
留学先の大学やPONTISなどで日本語を学んでもらえると嬉しいですね。
