小説ロマンシングサガ3-宿命を乗り越えて-　第10話　妖精との出会い～フォルネウス兵襲来

モニカ、ユリアン、エクレアの三人は、バンガードへすぐにでも向かいたかったが、今日の便はもう出航してしまっていた。次の便まで、ピドナで待つことにした。

「せっかくだから、ピドナを散策したいですわ」

モニカの意見で、ピドナの街を散策することになった。

ピドナの街を歩いていると、「グレートフェイクショー！世界の不思議な生き物をみられます」という看板があり、行ってみることにした。

「入場料は10オーラムです」

三人は10オーラムを支払って、テントに入った。中には、たくさんの人だかりがあって、生き物を見ることはできなかった。

「や、やめて・・・」

「しゃべったぞ！」

どうも、その生き物は話すことができるらしい。

グレートフェイクショーを後にした三人は、夕暮れどきになったので、宿屋に泊まることにした。

「ユリアン、カタリナたちがアビスゲートを閉じに行くと聞いて、すぐに、アビスゲートを閉じるために自分も行きたいと言ったのは、どうしてなの？」

「実は・・・15年前の死食で、妹を亡くしているんです。それで、とても他人事だとは思えなくて・・・トーマスやエレンがアビスゲートを閉じるために頑張るなら、俺も、と思って・・・」

「そうだったの・・・ごめんなさい、過去のことを聞いてしまって」

「いいんです。モニカ様、危険な旅になるとは思いますが、必ずモニカ様をお守りします」

「言ったでしょ、ユリアン、私をモニカと呼んで」

「わ、わかりました。モニカ、必ず守ります」

そのとき、エクレアが口をはさんだ。

「ねえ、あなたたち、付き合ってるの？」

「いや・・・そうじゃなくて、俺は、モニカのボディガードみたいなものなんだ」

「ふうん、そうなんだ」

モニカは、顔を真っ赤にしていた。

夜、眠っているとき、あの見世物小屋で聞いた鳴き声が聞こえてきた。

「泣いているの・・・どうしましょう。ユリアン、助けに行かない」

「行きましょう」

三人は、深夜、ひっそりとしたグレートフェイクショーのテントへ行って、檻に閉じ込められている妖精を見つけた。妖精は、体力がなく、疲れているようだった。

「かわいそうに、今、鍵を開けますわ」

すると、妖精は檻から出て、言った。

「ありがとう。私は、南のジャングルに住んでいたの。でも、捕まってしまって・・・ジャングルにある村に帰るけど、もしジャングルに来ることがあったら、私を探してみてね。お返しができるかもしれないわ」

妖精は、飛んでどこかへ消えた。

「ジャングル・・・そういえば、ジャングルにもアビスゲートがあると聞いたことがありますわ。バンガードのあと、行ってみるのがよいでしょう」

一泊した三人は、その日の便で、バンガードへ向かうことにした。

一方、そのころ、トーマスたちは、バンガード行きの船で眠っているところだった。もうすぐ、バンガードへ到着するというときに、船が大揺れした。

甲板にいる船員は驚いた様子で言った。

「なんだ？！大波か？あれは・・・モンスターだ！助けてくれ！」

声を聞いたトーマスたちは、すぐに甲板に出ていった。そこには、何やら海からやってきた、ずぶ濡れのモンスターが3体いた。

「我々は、フォルネウス様の部下だ・・・この船に、宿命の子がいるはずだ・・・われらとともに、海底宮に来てもらおう・・・」

エレンは、闘志をむき出しにして、言った。

「また来たわね！そうはさせないわ！」

エレンの斧がフォルネウス兵の身体に刺さった。

「ぎゃあ！」

フォルネウス兵は、苦痛の声をあげながらも、反撃してきた。

「きゃあ！」

「エレン、大丈夫か？！」

トーマスはとびかかって、フォルネウス兵に槍を突き刺した。続いて、カタリナが剣でフォルネウス兵の身体を切断した。

残り2体のフォルネウス兵は、恐れをなして海へと逃げて行った。

船員・乗客、全員が無事だった。

「よかった・・・まさか、海でも襲われるとは・・・しかし、どうして、サラのことがわかるんだ？モンスターは何か気配でも感じ取っているのだろうか・・・」

トーマスたちは不思議がっていた。

バンガードへ到着すると、街は殺人事件の話題でいっぱいだった。

「フォルネウスの部下と名乗るモンスターが、バンガードの街を荒らしているんです。それで、亡くなった人もいるんです。キャプテンはどうしたものかと悩んでいます」

「キャプテン？キャプテンって誰かしら？」

カタリナが尋ねた。

「市長のことです。バンガードの市長は、自分のことをキャプテンと言うんです」

トーマスたちは、バンガード市長の家を訪ねてみることにした。

「フォルネウス兵に襲われた？どうしよう、市民を守らないと・・・」

「キャプテン、古い伝承によると、聖王はバンガードを動かして、フォルネウスのいる海底宮まで行ったらしいわ。バンガードを動かしましょう」

カタリナはそのように話しかけた。

「そうか、もちろん、協力してくれるよね？」

すると、ハリードは、すかさず「金次第だな」と答えた。

「うーむ、3000オーラムでどうかな？」

「5000オーラム出してほしい」

エレンたちは、顔をしかめていた。

「ハリードって・・・お金にがめついのね・・・」

「故国復興のための軍資金らしいわよ・・・」

「ええい、足元をみおって、5000オーラム出しますよ」

「よし、じゃあ、どうすればバンガードを動かせる？」

「バンガードの地下に、操縦室があるはずじゃ」

「まずはそこからだな」

一行は、バンガードの地下への入り口を探すことにした。

Thomas sprang forward and thrust his spear into the Forneus soldier. Next, Katarina cut the Forneus soldier's body with her sword.

The two remaining Forneus soldiers were terrified and fled to the sea.

All crew and passengers were safe.

"I'm glad... I didn't expect to be attacked at sea... But how do you know about Sarah? I wonder if the monster senses something..."

Thomas and the others were puzzled.

When I arrived in Vanguard, the city was full of stories of murder.

“Monsters claiming to be Forneus’ subordinates are ravaging the city of Vanguard.

Thomas and his friends decided to visit the Vanguard mayor's house.
