【Research Report】Study on the Perceptions of Rural Living among Young People in the Tokyo area.

Summary

  • 54.2% of young people living in the Tokyo area express a desire to experience living in rural areas.

  • Especially among young individuals who are highly aware of SDGs and addressing social issues, the intention to live in rural areas rises to 68.1%.

  • For young people with a desire to live in rural areas, the top attraction of those regions is the prospect of a relaxed lifestyle, with 68.7% choosing it as their primary reason.

  • The ideal way of working for those considering rural living is equally divided between two options: "having a home in the countryside and working for a company in the city, engaging in telework from home" and "having a home in the countryside and working in the same local area or region."

  • The key factors to consider for rural living are financial aspects (61.1%) and securing employment opportunities (41.5%).

  • When choosing a destination for migration, the accessibility of public transportation and access to the city center are important factors. The top five preferred prefectures are Hokkaido in the first place, followed by Nagano in second, Yamanashi in third, Okinawa in fourth, and Shizuoka in fifth.
