3-Year Anniversary and Release Party for 「Speaking Brown」～Brother Noland in store Live 2024.07.01.
ハワイのローカル音楽のレア・グルーブから最新のアーティストを紹介するレーベルAloha Got Soulが、店舗を開設して、3周年ということで、新リリース記念のインストアライブを含む、アニバサリー・Partyに行ってきました。
僕がはじめにAloha Got Soulという言葉を聞いたのは、2016年にイギリスの再発レーベルSTRUTから、発売されたコンピレーション「Aloha Got Soul (Soul, AOR & Disco in Hawai’i 1979-1985)」。70年代、80年代にハワイで録音されたファンク、ディスコ、ジャズ、AORを収録されたアルバムは、当時のトレンドのサウンドであるともに、ハワイらしい緩やかな空気を感じさせる作品集でした。
Aloha Got Soul, a label that showcases the artists from the rare grooves to recent of local Hawai'i music, is celebrating its third anniversary with an anniversary party, including a live in-store performance to celebrate the new release.
I first heard about Aloha Got Soul in 2016, when British reissue label STRUT released the compilation Aloha Got Soul (Soul, AOR & Disco in Hawai'i 1979-1985). The album, which included funk, disco, jazz and AOR recorded in Hawai'i in the '70s and '80s, was a collection of works that were both trendy sounds of the time and had a gentle, Hawaiian vibe.
そのアルバムに収録されていたアーティストの中で、知ってたのは、Tender Leaf, Lemuria。これらのアーティストの出会いは、90年代「Free Soul」という名前で、
橋下徹を中心に、都市生活者の若者のために、選曲されたコンピレーションでした。
加えて、渋谷に大型店舗をオープンさせたHMVには、Free Soulのコンピレーションだけではなく、フリッパーズ・ギターやピチカート・ファイブなど、60年代、70年代のポップ・カルチャーそして、80年代のイギリスからのネオ・アコースティックからの影響をより現代的にかつファッショナブルに再生させてミュージシャンの作品も店舗に並べられ、「渋谷系」として一世を風靡しており、多くのレア・グルーブ作品が再発され、その中にTender Leaf, Lemuriaも入っていたわけです。
Among the artists on that album, I knew Tender Leaf, Lemuria, and these artists met in the 90's under the name "Free Soul",
It was a compilation of songs selected by Toru Hashimoto and others for young urbanites.
In addition to the Free Soul compilations, HMV, which opened a large store in Shibuya, also offers a wide range of music from the 60s and 70s pop culture of Flipper's Guitar and Pizzicato Five, as well as neo-acoustic influences from the UK in the 80s, all revived in a more contemporary and fashionable way. Many rare groove albums were reissued, and Tender Leaf and Lemuria were among them.
そして、「Aloha Got Soul (Soul, AOR & Disco in Hawai’i 1979-1985)」に話を戻すと、
すでに日本で購入していたこのアルバムを改めて見かけたのは、Kakaako地区にできたファッションナブルな商業施設の２Fに移転した「Hungry Ears Records」でした。
そこでは、Aloha Got Soulの他の作品を見かけ、まとめて買うとお店の人から、友達のやっているレーベルで、70年代のローカルな音楽をリリースしているよと教えてくれました。
And back to "Aloha Got Soul (Soul, AOR & Disco in Hawai'i 1979-1985)",
I had already purchased this album in Japan, but I saw it again at Hungry Ears Records, which had moved to the second floor of a fashionable commercial building in the Kakaako district.
There, I saw other Aloha Got Soul albums, and when I bought them all together, the store owner told me that his friend runs a label that releases local music from the 70s.
そして2021年にお店をオープン、しかしコロナ禍でなかなかハワイへは行けず、やっと店に行けたのが、2022年夏、ちょうど日本でも絶大な人気を博したKarapanaの再発が発売された直後で、前週の一周年のPartyをしていたとのことでした。They opened his store in 2021, but the Corona disaster made it difficult for me to go to Hawaii, and I was finally able to visit the store in the summer of 2022, just after the re-release of Karapana, which was extremely popular in Japan in the 70’s and he had a party for the first anniversary the week before.
それから、何度か店舗を訪れましたが、残念だったのは、昨年の10月。
電話をかけても誰も出ず、調べてみると、なんと、日本へのツアー中！
Since then, I visited the store several times, but to my disappointment, last October.
It seemed that the store was closed and when I checked, to my surprise, they were on tour to Japan!
ということで、お店には行けずじまいでしたが、今回 オープン3周年記念ということで、Partyとインストアライブがあるということで、久しぶりに伺いました。
So, I could not go to the store, but this time, I visited the store for the first time in a long time because there was a party and an in-store live performance to celebrate the third anniversary of the opening of the store.
地元の人たちで、ごった返す中、今回のメインは、当日発売になった80年作、「Speaking Brown」のアーティストBrother Nolandのインストアライブでした。

彼の40年前にレゲエのリズムを取り入れたヒット曲「Coconuts Girl」ハワイ再録バージョンがリリース

Brother Nolandの演奏は、ハワイのローカルな音楽にビートルズ、トラフィックを思わせるコード進行も加わり、音楽が時代とともに、影響し合いながら、生まれて行ったことを実感しました。
アメリカやイギリスのカウンターカルチャーやロックに影響受けながら、ローカルの音楽がミックスされるという意味では、J Popときた構造であり、オリジナルではない緩さが心地よい。
そして山下達郎をハワイのバンドによるカバーもリリース。そんな次の世代に受け継がれたカバーのカバーという文化の積み重なり。
Brother Noland's performance was a real reminder of how music has been born over time, influencing each other, with the addition of chord progressions reminiscent of the Beatles and Traffic to the local music of Hawaii.
In the sense that local music is mixed with American and British counterculture and rock music, the structure is similar to that of J Pop, and the unoriginal looseness is pleasant.
And they also released a cover of Tatsuro Yamashita by a Hawaiian band. Such is the accumulation of a culture of covers of covers that has been passed on to the next generation.
