Matt
Hey, I'm starving to death.
How about you Sarah?
Sarah
Yes, I'm hungry too and tired with walking.
We should've eaten breakfast.
Matt
You were the one who said we didn't need breakfast.
Sarah
Yeah, but you also agreed with that, Matt!
You ate dinner a lot last night, didn't you?
Matt
Yup, anyway, I think it's about time to have lunch.
Do you know any good restaurant around here?
Sarah
Why don't we search on Google map?
Since we're not familiar with this area.
サラ
Google
Matt
I thought you've searched already.
Sarah
I couldn't search last night since you were so drunk.
Matt
Ahh, I see, sorry about that.
Sarah
How about this restaurant?
You said you wanted to try Soba before, right?
Matt
What's that?
マット
Sarah
Don't you remember?
You love Udon, then Toshi recomended another Japanese noodle called "Soba".
Matt
Ah! That one! I just remembered.
It sounds nice, let's try!
Sarah
Deal! So follow me then.
Matt
Okay, thanks. How long does it take to get there?
Sarah
I guess it's not really far from here. It seems to be along 6th Avenue.
Let's go. It takes about 5 minutes on foot, I think.
Matt
By the way, have you ever eaten Soba?
Sarah
Yeah, I have actually. It's really good.
Matt, I bet you'll like it too.
Matt
Nice, I can't wait to eat it!
Sarah
Do you know what Soba is made from?
Matt
I guess flour or something like Udon, right?
Sarah
I thought you would say so, but it's not.
Matt
Really? So what's it made from then?
Sarah
It's basically made from buckwheat flour and water.
Matt
I see, why do you know?
Sarah
I searched on the internet before.
Here we are!
Matt
Oh, it's a bit smaller restaurant than I thought and it looks old.
Sarah
That probably means this restaurant has been popular for years, doesn't it?
Matt
I hope so.
Let's go inside, I'm hungry.
Server
Welcome! Please sit wherever you like.
Sarah
Okay, where shall we sit?
Matt
Hm, there! The tatami seat!
Sarah
Yes, nice.
Matt
So Sarah, what do you recomend?
Sarah
Let me see the menu.
Ah! How about this? Tanuki Soba.
Matt
What is that?
マット
Sarah
It means Raccoon dog Soba.
Matt
What? Are you serious? Japanese eat even Raccoon dogs?
Sarah
No worries, it's just a name of the Soba.
Matt
Okay, I'll have that one. You?
Sarah
Well, I will try Fox Soba!
Matt
Are you kidding me?
Sarah
No, it's true, see.
Kitsune Soba which literally translates into Fox Soba.
Matt
Wow, why do they name them with animal names?
Sarah
I have no idea, but don't you know Kitsune Udon?
You love Udon, don't you?
Matt
Yeah I love, but I always eat Niku Udon.
Sarah
I see, but I think Tanuki Soba doesn't have meat.
Is that okay with you?
Matt
Yup fine, I just want to eat something immediately now.
Sarah
I see. Excuse me!
Server
Yes, are you ready to order?
Sarah
We'll have one Tanuki Soba and one Kitsune Soba.
Server
Okay, anything else?
Matt
Can I have a larger serving please for Tanuki Soba?
Server
Sure, you can have 1.5 times larger noodle than the normal one with the same price.
Matt
Nice! I'll have it.
That's all, thank you.
Sarah
So why don't you search the origin of Kitsune Soba and Tanuki Soba?
Matt
Me? I don't have such energy anymore.
Sarah
Okay I will search and won't tell you.
Matt
Ah I will search mine, and you search yours, okay?
Sarah
Yeah okay.
Matt
Hm, there seems to be many different opinions.
Here, the tempura's batter that is called "Tenkasu" is used for Tanuki Soba.
One says that it used to be called "Netanuki", meaning to take out ingredients such as vegetables from Tempura, then it was changed into "Tanuki"
Sarah
I see, what else?
Matt
Wait, look!
In Kansai region, the ingredient of Tanuki Soba is different from Kanto's which I ordered.
Sarah
Oh really? I didn't know that.
Matt
And it says, Kansai Tanuki Soba has the same ingredient as Kitsune Udon.
Sarah
What do you mean? It sounds complicated.
Matt
Yeah, here.
It was believed that raccoon dogs have been transforming into human beings or something in Japan since a long time ago.
Sarah
Okay, and then?
Matt
Then, in Kansai's case, Udon is more popular than Soba,
and when they see the Soba which has the same ingredient as Kitsune Udon,
they think that Tanuki transforms into Kitsune Udon to trick them. It's still Soba, though.
So they call it Tanuki Soba.
Sarah
That makes sense, but Raccoon dogs couldn't perfectly transform into Udon.
Matt
Yeah, sounds like that.
How about yours?
Sarah
I think this is much easier than yours.
Do you know Aburaage? Which is Kitsune Soba's ingredient.
Matt
Uh‐huh.
マット
うん。
Sarah
It's deep‐fried tofu actually.
And it's said that Foxes like it, that's why they call it Kitsune Soba or Udon.
See? It's simple, isn't it?
Matt
Yeah, definitely.
Server
Okay, here's your Tanuki Soba and Kitsune Soba.
Matt
Ohh I've been waiting for!
Let's eat!
Sarah
Yes.
Matt
Mm! This Soba is good!
Sarah
I told you that you would like it.
Matt
Or maybe I'm just hungry which makes anything tasty for me.
Sarah
Whatever.
Matt
Let me have a bite.
Sarah
Sure, try!
Matt
This is also good.
I think I should try Kitsune Udon next time.
Sarah
You eat so quickly, Matt!
I'm always surprised.
Matt
I don't, it just so happens that you eat slow.
Sarah
No, this is the normal speed for normal people.
By the way, what shall we do after lunch?
Matt
Hm I have an idea.
Let's go watch that movie you wanted to see.
Sarah
Yes! Were you planning to watch it also?
Matt
No, I came up with this idea just now.
Let me check the schedule of the movie.
Sarah
Yes, please.
Matt
The next one will start at 4 o'clock, so still we have time.
What do you want to do until the movie?
Sarah
Let me see, how about going shopping to buy your T-shirt.
Since you said you wanted a white T-shirt, didn't you?
Matt
Yeah, it sounds nice!
Actually, I've found a shop that I'm interested in.
I heard it's a very famous shop even for celebrities.
Sarah
It sounds expensive, though.
Did you check their price?
Matt
No, I didn't, but it's okay. Let's check anyway.
Sarah
Okay. How much is your budget?
Matt
Around 50 bucks or so.
Sarah
I see. Where is the shop located, by the way?
Matt
I think it should take about 20 minutes by subway from here.
Ah it's near from the cake shop which you bought a cake for Sherry the other day.
Sarah
Ah, I got it. I think I've heard of the shop before.
I think we should get off at 72nd street station then.
I've been also interested in it. Let's go.
Matt
Sarah, you are still eating?
Sarah
Almost done. Wait a second.
Matt
Okay I will pay ahead.
It's on me this time.
Sarah
Of course, I paid all last night.
I don't think you remember, though.
Matt
Oh really? I didn't realize that at all. Many thanks.
I think I should refrain from drinking so much.
What do you think?
Sarah
It's up to you Matt, but honestly you could cut down on alcohol.
I'm done! I'm full.
Matt
Excuse me!
May we have the check?
Server
Sure, that comes to thirteen sixty in all.
Are you going to pay separately?
Matt
No it's okay. Here, fifteen.
Keep the change. Thank you.
Sarah
Kitsune Soba was delicious, thank you.
Server
Thank you.
Have a good day.
Sarah
You too.
