For a long time we have been planning to do this workshop; "Survival cooking when a disaster hits - vegetarian special", under the guidance of our own disaster prevention specialist Mayumi Shizuku San. Finally we did it today. It's difficult to explain and difficult to believe how much we need to learn and what is actually " preparedness" until you attend a workshop by Mayumi San.

Me n Reiko San!!
Trying my best to listen, comprehend and translate on the spot!!😅

Today around 27 people had gathered in a community hall and she started her workshop by assigning responsibilities to everyone in case fire breaks out as we were using cassette stoves. I couldn't believe my ears as she patiently explained stepwise procedures how to call 119 and what to say if fire breaks out and the difference between the 3 fire extinguishers we had with us there and how to use them. I thought "How can someone be so perfect?"

Then we learned how to wash our hands with least water usage which amazed everyone! Some thought it's magic and started to check the pet bottle and the hole in it!! Everyone including me was amazed!!

When a big disaster hits, electricity, gas and water supply will be disrupted. We learned how to cook survival food with available stuff . Today's items were cooking rice with minimal water and green pea snacks , rice with green tea ( when water in not available), pilaf with tomato juice and frozen mix vegetables , carrot and raisin salad, white asparagus and kelp salad. She even taught us how to make okayu ( soft khichdi type rice) in a thermos. All the items were made by the participants with Mayumi San's guidance while communicating in English and Japanese among themselves.

We even tasted many emergency food with long expiry dates like canned breads.

It was such an educational and interactive workshop! Thanks to all the participants for joining and helping in different works like shopping, setting up, managing registration and cleaning up.

Can't thank you all enough ! In the end I hope that disasters like 3/11 don't strike!!
