不思議の国のアリス｜翻訳03（第2章　涙の池①）

・はじめに
英文がスッと読めるようになりたくてアリスで英語勉強しています。
頭の中を整理するための訳なので、直訳ぎみで日本語がおかしい箇所があります。

Chapter II
the pool of tears（涙の池①）

“Curiouser and curiouser!” cried Alice (she was so much surprised, that for the moment she quite forgot how to speak good English).

「ヤバいわ、ヤバすぎるわ！」アリスは叫んだ。
（その瞬間、アリスは驚きすぎてちゃんとした言葉を話すことを忘れてしまった）

• 「Curiouser and curiouser」
※本来なら「more curiouser ond curiouser」にしなければいけない。今はこの言葉がアリスからの引用でドラマなどで使われる時がある。意味は「ますます奇妙だ」

“Now I’m opening out like the largest telescope that ever was! Good-bye, feet!” (for when she looked down at her feet, they seemed to be almost out of sight, they were getting so far off).

「今までで一番大きな望遠鏡みたいに伸びていっているわ！足さん、さようなら！」（見下ろしたとき、アリスの足はとても遠くに行ってしまい、ほとんど見えなくなっていた）

• that ever was（今までで）the largest telescopeのことを強調している。

“Oh, my poor little feet, I wonder who will put on your shoes and stockings for you now, dears? I’m sure I sha’n’t be able! I shall be a great deal too far off to trouble myself about you: you must manage the best way you can—but I must be kind to them,” thought Alice, “or perhaps they wo’n’t walk the way I want to go! Let me see. I’ll give them a new pair of boots every Christmas.”

「あぁ、私の可哀想な小さな足。ねえ、愛しの足さん。誰があなたの靴とストッキングを履かせてくれるの？私には絶対に出来ないわ！すごく遠くの、遥か彼方にいるあなたについて悩むわ。あなたが出来る一番良い方法があるはずよ・・・私、彼らに優しくしなきゃ」とアリス。
「そうしないと、彼らは私が行きたい所へ歩かなくなっちゃうかも！うーん。毎年クリスマスに新しいブーツをあげるってのはどうかしら？」

• I'm sure（絶対に～だと思う）
• sha'n'tシャント（shall notの短縮形。するべきじゃない）
• dealディール（分配する、分ける、配る、加える、売買する、取引）
• a great deal（たくさんの量、多量）
• trouble about（煩わせる、迷惑をかける、心配する、悩む）
• pair（ペア、おそろい、一組、夫婦、婚約者同士）
• pair of ～（boots/shoes/gloves などなど、二つ一組の物に使う。）

And she went on planning to herself how she would manage it. “They must go by the carrier,” she thought; “and how funny it’ll seem, sending presents to one’s own feet! And how odd the directions will look!

アリスはどうしようか計画を練った。「ブーツは運送屋さんにお願いしなきゃ」と考えた。「自分の足にプレゼントを送るってなんておかしいのかしら！宛先も変に見えるわ！

• ※they must go~のtheyはブーツのこと。足のことかと間違えた・・・。
• carrierキャリー（theがついてるので名詞→運送屋。運搬、運ぶ、携帯する、伝える、所持する）
• sending（send。送る）
• odd（変な、奇妙な、余りの、離れた、人目につかない）
• direction（指揮、指導、指示、行き方、道順、方向性）

• Esq（Esquire（エスクァイア）の略。～殿、～様）
• hearthrug（暖炉の前に敷くラグ。hearthが壁炉のこと。）
• fender（暖炉の前の柵）
• nonsense（くだらない、ばかげたこと、無意味）

Just then her head struck against the roof of the hall: in fact she was now more than nine feet high, and she at once took up the little golden key and hurried off to the garden door.

まさにその時、頭が広間の天井にぶつかった。実に9フィート（約2.7ｍ）以上の大きさになっていた。（※イラストでは首が長くなっている）
アリスはすぐに小さな金のカギを取って、急いで庭のドアへ向かった。

• struckストライク（打つ、ぶつける、削除する、擦切る、心を打つ、恐怖心を引き起こす、災害が襲う）

Poor Alice! It was as much as she could do, lying down on one side, to look through into the garden with one eye; but to get through was more hopeless than ever: she sat down and began to cry again.

可哀想なアリス！一生懸命ドアの側で横になって片目で庭を覗いてみたが、先に進むには今までよりもさらに望みは薄くなったようだった。またアリスは座り込んで泣き始めた。

“You ought to be ashamed of yourself,” said Alice, “a great girl like you,” (she might well say this), “to go on crying in this way! Stop this moment, I tell you!” But she went on all the same, shedding gallons of tears, until there was a large pool all around her, about four inches deep and reaching half down the hall.

「あなたは恥じるべきよ」とアリス「あなたみたいな大きな少女が、」（アリスはこのように言うのも分かる）「メソメソ泣いているなんて！あなたに言うわ、今すぐ泣くのをやめなさい！」しかし、アリスはそのまま泣き続けた。大量の涙が流れて、アリスの周りに大きな水たまりができた。4インチ（約10cm）の深さで広間の半分くらいまで続いていた。

• ashamed（恥じて、恥ずかしがって）
• might well（～だろう、～するのも分かる）
• shedシェッド（液体を流す、噴出させる、葉などを落ちる、脱皮、毛が抜け落ちる。名詞で納屋、物置、車庫。）
• gallon（液量単位。1ガロン＝約4リットル）

After a time she heard a little pattering of feet in the distance, and she hastily dried her eyes to see what was coming. It was the White Rabbit returning, splendidly dressed, with a pair of white kid-gloves in one hand and a large fan in the other: he came trotting along in a great hurry, muttering to himself, as he came, “Oh! The Duchess, the Duchess! Oh! Wo’n’t she be savage if I’ve kept her waiting!”

しばらくすると、遠くから小さくパタパタと足音が聞こえた。アリスは急いで涙を拭いて、何の音かと見てみた。あの白いうさぎが戻ってきたのだ。立派に着飾って、白い子ヤギ革の手袋を一つの手に、もう一方の手には大きな扇子を持っていた。うさぎは小走りでとても急いで来ていた。ブツブツひとりごとを言いながら、「オオ！公爵夫人、公爵夫人！オオ！彼女をこれ以上待たせたらただじゃすまないぞ！」

• patter（パラパラと降る、パタパタと音をたてる、パタパタ走る）
• hastilyヘイスティリー（急いで、急遽、早々、さっさと。「haste」ヘイストが急ぐこと。）
• dried（dry。乾く）
• dried her eyes→涙を拭いた。dry your hands（手を拭く）とか言う。
• splendidlyスプレンダリィ（見事に、ばっちり、素晴らしく、立派に）
• kid（子供、子ヤギ、青二才）
• trotトゥラット（早足、小走り）
• mutterマター（ブツブツぼそぼそ不満を言う、雷などがゴロゴロ鳴る）
• Duchessダッチェス（公爵夫人※公爵位が貴族の最上位で王位に次ぐ称号）
• savageサヴェージ（凶暴な、どう猛な、残酷な）

◆Wo’n’t she be savage if I’ve kept her waiting!
→【修辞疑問】
言っていることとは反対の意味になる表現（反語）。文脈から感じ取るしかない。この場合は「彼女を待たせ続けたら残酷なことにならないだろうか？」→「なるに決まっている！」という感じ。

Alice felt so desperate that she was ready to ask help of any one: so, when the Rabbit came near her, she began, in a low, timid voice, “If you please, Sir——” The Rabbit started violently, dropped the white kid-gloves and the fan, and skurried away into the darkness as hard as he could go.

アリスはとても絶望的になっていて、誰かに助けを求めたかった。なので、うさぎが近くに来た時、アリスは低い、おどおどした小さな声で、
「もし、お願いです・・・」
うさぎはギャッと猛烈に驚き、手袋と扇子を落とし、ピョンピョン跳ねながら暗闇へ大急ぎで逃げてしまった。

• despertareデスパレート（絶望的な、やけくそになった、切望して、必死の）
• timidティミッド（おっかなびっくり、気の小さい、臆病な、内気な）
• violentlyヴァイオレントリー（荒々しく、激しく、乱暴に、猛烈に、不法に）
• started violently→このstartedは始めたという意味ではなく「（ギャッと）驚いた」という意味になる「猛烈に驚いた」
• skurried （「scurry（スカリィ）」の過去形？調べても出てこない。小走りで行く、チョコチョコ走る、跳ねる、急ぎ足）

Alice took up the fan and gloves, and, as the hall was very hot, she kept fanning herself all the time she went on talking.

アリスは扇子と手袋を拾い上げた。広間はとても暑かったので、扇子であおぎながら話し続けた。

“Dear, dear! How queer everything is to-day! And yesterday things went on just as usual. I wonder if I’ve been changed in the night? Let me think: was I the same when I got up this morning?

 
「あぁ、もう！今日はなんて変な日なの！昨日までは普通だったのに。夜から変わったのかしら？うーん、朝起きた時は同じだったわよね？」

I almost think I can remember feeling a little different. But if I’m not the same, the next question is, ‘Who in the world am I?’ Ah, that’s the great puzzle!”

「小さな違いを感じることをもう少しで思い出せそうなんだけど。でも、もし私が同じじゃなかったら、次の問題は“この世界の私って誰なの？”あぁ、これは難問よ！」

• puzzleパズル（ジグソーパズル、なぞ、難題、難問、当惑、困惑、まごつき）

And she began thinking over all the children she knew that were of the same age as herself, to see if she could have been changed for any of them.

アリスは彼女と同い年の子たちを思い浮かべた。彼らのうち（of them）の誰か（any）に変わってしまったら分かるのか。

“I'm sure I’m not Ada,” she said, “for her hair goes in such long ringlets, and mine doesn’t go in ringlets at all; and I’m sure I ca’n’t be Mabel, for I know all sorts of things, and she, oh, she knows such a very little!

「絶対に私はエイダじゃないわ」とアリス。「彼女の髪は長い巻き毛になってるけど、私の髪は違うもの。あとメイベルじゃないことも確かね。私は色んなことを知っているけど、彼女は、そう、彼女は何も知らないのよ！」

• all sorts of things（なんでもかんでも、色んなことを）直訳すると「すべての種類のことを」

Besides, she’s she, and I’m I, and—oh dear, how puzzling it all is! I’ll try if I know all the things I used to know. Let me see: four times five is twelve, and four times six is thirteen, and four times seven is—oh dear! I shall never get to twenty at that rate!

「さらに彼女は彼女、それと私は私・・・あら、なんて難しいの！覚えている限り知っていることを思い出してみるわ。ええと、4×5＝12、4×6＝13、4×7＝7の・・・あら！こんな調子じゃあ決して20にならないわよ！」

• besidesビサイズ（～に加えて、さらに。否定文では~以外で。）
• at that rate（もしそうなら、そんな調子では）

However, the Multiplication-Table doesn’t signify: let’s try Geography. London is the capital of Paris, and Paris is the capital of Rome, and Rome—no, that’s all wrong, I’m certain! I must have been changed for Mabel! I’ll try and say ‘How doth the little—’,” and she crossed her hands on her lap, as if she were saying lessons, and began to repeat it, but her voice sounded hoarse and strange, and the words did not come the same as they used to do:—

「でも、掛け算表なんて重要じゃないわ。地理をやりましょう。ロンドンの首都はパリで、パリの首都はローマで、ローマの・・・やだ、全部間違ってるじゃない。分かったわ！私はメイベルになったに違いないわ！あの詩を言ってみよう」
アリスは手を包むように重ね合わせて（※お祈りのポーズみたいな？）、詩が言えるかどうか繰り返し始めた。だけど、アリスの声は喉を痛めたような変な声で、以前と同じように言葉が出てこなかった。

小さなワニさんどうやって
輝くしっぽを進化させ、
ナイルの川を注ぐのか
全てが金のうろこの上に！

なんてにニコニコ楽しげに、
なんてきちんと爪広げ、
小さな魚を招き入れ、
優しくほほえむ顎へと運ぶ！

【メモ】
※『Against Idleness and Mischief』の詩のパロディ
元はミツバチがせわしなく働いているようすが書いてあるけど、アリスの詩ではワニが楽して魚を食べるという正反対のことを言ってしまっている。皮肉？

• pour（注ぐ、つぐ、流す、大量に送り出す、吐き出す、放射する、浴びせる）
• scale（量り、体重計、目盛り、物差し、定規、規模）かと思ったら、魚や爬虫類の「うろこ」の意味もあるそう。
• cheerfully（快活に、元気よく、楽しげに）
• grinグリン（歯を見せてにっこり、ニッと笑う）
• neatlyニートリィ（きちんと、こぎれいに、こざっぱりと）
• spreadスプレッド（広げる、期間が及ぶ、わたる、蔓延する、広まる、行き渡る）
• claw（鉤爪、フック、はさみ、爪）
• gently（優しく、親切に、穏やかに、徐々に、なだらかに、育ちが良く）
• smiling（smileスマイル。笑みを浮かべている、微笑んでいる。）
